NEW ORLEANS, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion. The Coast Guard said no one was killed in the explosion, which was spotted by a commercial helicopter flying over the site Thursday morning. All 13 people aboard the rig have been accounted for, with one injury. The extent of the injury was not known.

They were rescued from the water by an offshore service vessel, the Crystal Clear, said Coast Guard Cmdr. She said they were taken to a nearby platform. All were being flown to the Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma to be checked over.

"Thirteen people were seen huddled together in the water wearing gumby suits or immersion suits, water protection suits, so we were able to confirm that all people were accounted for," Coast Guard spokesman Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said.

Seven Coast Guard helicopters, two airplanes and three cutters were dispatched to the scene from New Orleans, Houston and Mobile, Ala., Ben-Iesau said. She said authorities do not know whether oil

Mariner Energy. Completely engulfed in flames at 9:30 am. Production reportedly completely shut in. Jindal explaining live now. Nearly burned out now. One injury. Everyone accounted for. There were 7 active wells on the platform, one caught fire . All reported shut down.
Conflicting reports about a sheen sighted.

The Latest Rig Explosion IS Leaking Oil — Mile-Long Sheen Seen

Earlier it was reported that a rig owned by Mariner Energy had exploded, but that there were no injuries or fatalities, and that it was a non-producing platform that was not at risk of spewing oil.

WRONG.

According to the Coast Guard, via @breakingnews, there IS a mile-long sheen that’s visible from the platform.

You, rahbert, sir, are a devotee to either Admiral of the Fleet David Richard Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty... or lion tamer Clyde Beatty. With that quote, it is hard to pin down, ya know!

Coincidence? I don’t think so. Someone wants that moratorium against off shore drilling very badly.

I don't like to sound the tinfoil hat alarm, but these offshore oil derricks exploding and losing their drilling rig cabling somehow reminds me of the mysterious undersea cable cutting of Internet backbones in the Indian Ocean in 2008:

Wired Magazine: Undersea Cables Cut; 14 Countries Lose Web.

For those who remember, this happened at least five separate times...
