In the Pope's mind, Allah and YAHWEH are one and the same God??

Nope. Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch fame explained that.

From Robert Spencer on Muslim Beliefs and Sources of Extremism

The Catechism, working from Vatican II's "Nostra Aetate," does say that, "the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place among whom are the Muslims. These profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us adore one Merciful God, mankind's judge in the last day."

This is a carefully worded statement. It does not actually say that Muslims believe in Abraham's faith, but only that they profess to hold the faith of Abraham.

Professing and possessing are two different things: Certainly there are many more Christians who profess Christ than there are people who actually live for him. Nowhere does the Catechism say that Muslims are not eligible for the salvation that is in Christ, or that the Gospel should not be preached to them.

“I also posted right after that... he (Gen. Pet.)is overstating the case to try to avoid the gruesome outcome that may be the Islam way”

Good Lord man the General has an army!!!! Maybe he should just quit if he has this kind of fear and let someone else be in charge.

The Vatican does not need to take a position on the Ground Zero Mosque.

They didn't 'need' to take a position on this, either.

You're completely right. I mean, heck, not even 100-200 years ago, you had Catholics burning Protestant tracts and bible translations in the U.S. because of the false teachings contained therein.

Really? In the US? Since Catholics had historically been minorities in the US I think this is highly improbable.

In Europe - very likely - but likely not in the US unless it was in colonial Maryland.

I don't know what this has to do with confronting Islam except that it gives you a chance to take a gratuitous shot at Catholicism. Congratulations.

In the Pope's mind, Allah and YAHWEH are one and the same God??

I was infuriated when I first read that. After reflecting upon a lot of discussion in the blogosphere and reporting in good Catholic newspapers, I realized that the Pope is correct. If you and I both know a man, and we have vastly different understandings of him, does this mean that we know two different people? Of course not. One of us is likely to be misinterpreting a lot. I believe that to be the case of the Muslims. They worship the God of Abraham, but due to the prophet they follow, well ... they're doing it wrong. This is similar to Paul's 'unknown god' preaching.

Yes, Egypt has Copts (sometimes defined not as Christians by some people), Iraq and Lebanon has Assyrian Christians, and in that term, Middle East should not be viewed as a monolithic environment. BTW, the National Association of Evangelicals has also objected to the burning as well as the Vatican. Dove is now against its own larger body of Evangelical, which risks its chance to be be denounced as apostates and even cults from other Evangelicals. This burning is also doing internal damage between Evangelicals, and unity of American christians as a whole. Evangelicals (NAE) Condemn Planned Quran Burning

Did the Vatican take a position on the crucifix in the urine or dung on the picture of the Madonna?

If the mainstream is decrying the act, then it probably is the right thing to do. The world hates doing the right thing, so when the world hollers “foul!”, you may ought to follow through!

Gen. Patraeus (God Bless Him and his troops) needs to use this as an intelligence exploitation mechanism-sort through the muslim protestors in Afghanistan and see what shakes out-probably a few wanted types, ya think?

He also ought to leave the parsing of the rights (worship and speech) of free Americans to someone else;, he who has sworn an oath to protect the very act he is decrying.

God Bless

“Tell that to the missionaries, women and children that will suffer so some pastor can have his 15 minutes.”

They will be in no more or less danger than they are now, which is great, I agree.

As I said there is a lot of muddled thinking in the church post V2.

In particular the Vatican bureaucracy seems to have more than its fair share of infestation from the enemy.

Will be targeted??? 911 was just that following decades of attacks. Cowering will accomplish nothing.

I don't agree with the burning, it is a rude gesture. But to condemn it based on the fact the an already violent cult will be violent makes no sense.

I believe that JP2 kissed a lot of gifts. A much more emotionally expressive man than our current Pope.
