NEW JERSEY (WPIX) — A freshman at Rutgers University, first the victim of allegedly being secretly taped during a sexual encounter by two other students, is believed to have committed suicide.

Fellow freshmen students Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton have been charged with invasion of privacy for allegedly placing a camera in the 18-year-old student's dorm room.

Authorities say parts of the recording were placed on the internet.

Ravi and Wei were charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for using a camera to view and transmit a live image of the 18-year-old boy during a sexual encounter on Sept. 19.

Ravi was additionally charged with two more counts of invasion of privacy for trying to use the hidden camera to view the same student during another sexual encounter just three days later on Sept. 21.

According to sources, the victim from Ridgewood -- whose identity PIX 11 News is withholding -- is believed to have jumped off the George Washington bridge on Thursday, Sept. 23. The victim's car was found nearby with both his cell phone and computer inside.

Ravi was released on $25,000 bail Tuesday after surrendering to Rutgers police. Wei was released on her own recognizance Monday after surrdenering to Rutgers University police.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan, it is a fourth-degree crime to collect or view images depicting nudity or sexual content of an individual without that person's consent. The crime becomes a third-degree offense if the images are transmitted or distributed.

If convicted, Ravi and Wei face up to five years in jail.

“What an idiot. It’s just a sex tape.”

If you’re 18 & gay and haven’t told your family or friends and still trying to pass as hetero and someone posts a video of you having sex with a guy, it makes it more than “ just a sex tape”

My roommate was no pervert - she was a red-blooded American girl. But still I was nearly raped one night when I was sexiled and didn’t have the refuge of my room - didn’t matter at all if it was her girlfriend or boyfriend in there.

Either both roommates agree that sex takes precedence over security and studying, or it shouldn’t be happening.

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I lived in a dorm everyone’s rooms were open at any given time if we were in the vicinity of our respective rooms. On more than one occasion I returned to my room and a fellow hall mate was in there. We never even thought twice about it. We didn’t have computers, though.

I wonder if the girl was a willing participant in the invasion of privacy, or if she even knew what the guy was doing.

You just have to look at it realistically, if the kid didn’t want to get caught having sex or making out with a guy or a girl he shouldn’t have gone to college. Every person in the American society has the idea of what will and will not happen during a college career, and if you have no interest in being secretly video taped having sex in a dorm room, then you clearly should not attend a university. Its part of the culture to get pranked, live with it, or die by it.

A friend of mine who’d lived a somewhat sheltered life enrolled in an expensive private school when we graduated high school; she was assigned a minority roommate as part of some liberal experiment, and told the school she’d drop out if they didn’t switch her roommate. The school considered the money involved, and switched her roommate (this was before they would just be fill their seats with foreign students anyway). I didn’t live away at school, and couldn’t imagine being in the straight roommate’s predicament here (it would be weird even if the gay one was straight and using the room for that).

I don’t consider it “living in the past”; we live in whatever we make of it, and I choose 1950.

That is creepy; I couldn’t deal with that atmosphere (and fear) at all. Thank God you were OK.

Here in northern NJ they’ve downplayed the crimes on some of our campuses; they’re not in the best areas (Newark, Jersey City), and the campuses aren’t properly fortified. If you wouldn’t walk in these areas at night as a high school senior, you probably shouldn’t walk there as a college freshman.

My thought was that the homosexual lifestyle is so “cool”, wouldn’t he have been “proud” to let everyone know he was a homosexual? Why would he be so upset as to take his life? I don’t understand the motivation.
