The truth is that as a commentator and analyst, Williams has been skating on his reputation for a long time, and the ice was getting thin.
He had already given NPR cause for concern with previous statements on Fox, such as the time he inexplicably described Michelle Obama as Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress.
NPR, in other words, acted appropriately.
Of course, thats not how the incident is being taken by some on the right, where Williams is in the process of being sainted.
At Andrew Breitbarts Big Government site, the headline is Screw Free Speech, NPR Fires Juan Williams for Muslim Remarks.
Williams fellow Fox News contributor, Sarah Palin, just tweeted to the effect that NPR defends 1st Amendment Right, but will fire u if u exercise it.
Juan Williams: u got taste of Lefts hypocrisy, they screwed up firing you.
The First Amendment guarantees each of us the right to say whatever we wish, free of government interference. However, it does not guarantee us the right to be paid by NPR or anybody else to say whatever we wish.
It certainly does not mean that we are free to make bigoted remarks on national television and be guaranteed a paycheck.
After James OKeefe, the conservative guerrilla filmmaker and Breitbarts one-time protege, launched a bizarre seduction of a CNN reporter recently, Breitbart cut him loose, calling OKeefes antics patently gross and offensive.
He wasnt violating OKeefes right to free speech by doing so, he was holding him accountable.
Thats all NPR has done with Williams.

The Journal Commstitution is on the side of the ...Middle Eastern Liberals...Way to call it today Rush!
“Who buys this newspaper?”
Who buys any newspaper today? But this fish wrapper is one of the PC worst.
I feel really stupid but who is Stoakley Carmichael?
Nice tolerance indeed.
It’s not a newspaper, it’s a marketing slick for the progressive movement. The real ads in the paper are more factual and accurate than the ad copy being fraudulently passed off as news stories.
Like this one.
What is a conservative? A liberal who has gotten mugged.
How long will it be before we are saying Welcome aboard Juan.
BTW, I usually disagree with everything Juan says, but I agree with him about Muslims and I believe he has been absorbing a lot of stuff from Fox that may help convert him at least a little.
>>>>Who buys this newspaper?
Vets - to line cages & kennels... Fish Mongers - obvious reasons... Consumers with fireplaces - roll your own fire logs...
The CEO of NPR Vivian Schiller is a self-hating Jew and muslim apologist.
Juan is taking baby steps off the liberal plantation which the Urinal-Constipation and NPR agree is not to be tolerated.
I thought Rush calls it the Atlanta Journal Constipation.

Thanks mostly to Brit Hume.

This week’s “Fox News Sunday” panel discussion should be quite interesting.
Old Black Radical. they spelled it wrong though;
STOKELY CARMICHAEL
“Black Power is the coming together of black people to fight for their liberation by any means necessary.”
I used to buy it—for years and years. Then I sent them a message that I was tired of paying them to insult my values every morning at breakfast. I got repeated calls with offers of next-to-nothing subscriptions. I told them their paper was worth less-than-nothing, and I didn’t want it around anymore. Breakfast is so much more pleasant now.
