Time to pick up some bargains.
I remember reading in the paper 15+ years ago. It’s a curious story because I’d never heard of this.
Some local guy was taking his rifle to the Gunsmith because it wouldn’t work.
He put it in the back seat of his car, barrel facing him and it went off blowing his guts out. He died.
I wonder if it was a Rem 700?

You’re correct, quite obviously about primer seating. Law enforcement as a rule does not use reloads unless in a training situation, and unlikely then for the snipers because they typically shoot the same ammunition always, once a round is settled on.
Some people don’t know how to adjust a trigger, maybe that’s the problem here. 700’s used to have a pretty crisp trigger; don’t know about the new ones.
I think a sniper ought to have 3.5-4 lbs, not a bench rest trigger pull.

I have a Remington Model 700 Police Sniper rifle. Best rifle I have ever owned and is accurate repeatedly. At 300 yards it is deadly and I use it for coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and deer. I will keep mine. When they come for my weapons, the Remington 700 will be the rifle I use to return the ammunition first.

HEY don't be blaming handloaders for the problem, if you had watched the program, you would know the problem is the trigger. They showed how it had been manufactured, and the original designer had said the design was flawed. Don't be making scurrilous remarks, and unfounded accusations.

One of the best rifles made, IMO. I’ve never had that problem with mine. Heck, I even loosened the trigger pressure and haven’t had a misfire.

The 700 (aka the “40”) is still the primary weapon used by Marine snipers.
This story smells like another “Glock leg” story. There are always liberal mice at work gnawing on 2nd amendment rights wherever they can, and that includes attempting to destroy the companies that manufacture guns and rifles.

With deer season starting next Sat...I’m guessing a few insiders will pick up a few nice rifles on the cheap!......Bet the guns never make public auction...lol Someone should do a follow up in a few weeks

Mount one to to roof of 1980’s era Audi 5000 or a pre-2009 Toyota and you will have the world’s first unmanned assault vehicle.

Will the Portland PD be having a sale?

A guy was transporting a rifle in the back seat that was somehow aimed at him in that confined space & he left it loaded, to boot?
Whats wrong with this story?

That post about reloaders really Pi**ed me off. I have been reloading ammunition for a lot of years, and I have a lot of friends in the Reloading Fraternity. I can tell you from first hand experience that you will never find a more persnickity bunch than hand loaders. The first rule of all reloaders is safety.Every Handloader book or magazine you pick up that is the focus of each article, Safety, it is beat into every reloader from day one. To paint all reloaders with a broad brush and say Remington's problem was caused by reloaders is just not so.

I have owned and used a 243 Remington for 40 years and my grandson used it this past deer season with no problem

It went off in his driveway as he was putting it in his car.
To: ImJustAnotherOkie
"It went off in his driveway as he was putting it in his car." Yeah, but why was it loaded? Did he not like that particular gunsmith?

Time to pick up some bargains. Yes, I hope this scares a few people into putting their short-action 700s on consignment at my local gunshops. I'll happily accept the "risk".
