President Barack Obama said the political cost of overhauling the health care system turned out to be higher than he had expected. And he admits that he gets discouraged at times when dealing with the economy.
In an interview airing Sunday night on CBS' 60 Minutes, Obama said the health care system itself is huge and complicated and that changing it eluded previous presidents because it was so difficult.
"I made the decision to go ahead and do it, and it proved as costly politically as we expected probably actually a little more costly than we expected, politically," he said.
Obama said he thought that he would find common ground with Republicans by advancing health care proposals that had been introduced by Republican administrations as well as potential presidential candidate Mitt Romney when Romney was governor of Massachusetts.
"I couldn't get the kind of cooperation from Republicans that I had hoped for," he said. "And that was costly, partly because it created the kind of partisanship and bickering that really turn people off."
Obama said the danger of a second major recession is "much reduced" and a great depression is not on the horizon. Still a danger, he said, is the nation being "stuck in a new normal where unemployment rates stay high."
"I do get discouraged. I mean, there are times where I thought the economy would had gotten better by now," he said. "One of the things I think you understand as president is you're held responsible for everything. But you don't always have control of everything, especially an economy this big."

Now Pelosi claims all those congresscrooks who went kamikaze are glad they did.
She is probably right. Pensions and other retirement benefits, lobbying, opportunities with leftist Wall Street types....
THE BITTER CLINGERS Pres Ohaha, Pelosi, Reid, and the massacered Dems, are "bitterly clinging" to O/Care.
They'll demean Repubs for "taking pills from old American grammas."
REPUBLICANS SHOULD POINT OUT Thanks to O/Care, Americans will have to be happy with two brands of toothpaste---mint and plain.
I wouldn't read much into this. What else can she say? Like : “ We were wrong to set them up” ??? She cant say that. She is left with little except :”We made history and that always is unpopular at first.” especially since now they must defend it now. Republicans Boehner and McConnell never admitted that they made a mistake pushing TARP on their minority members (Boehner was crying when he pushed it); and they actually attacked bailouts when Obama took it over and made Obama own it (TARP).
The best news is that Pelosi and Reid are staying on, Obama, Pelosi, Reid are the faces again that voters have to see again. Pelosi is so stupid she thinks it's 2005 again.
Correct
Good thing Pelosi & Reid are still here to blame. It gets expensive renting “fall guys” ;-)
Winning big in the modern era is all about the ‘bad’ guy and stopping him:
1992 GB, 1994 Clinton(R landslide), 1996+1998 Newt(smaller dem win), 2006 GWB, 2008 GWB (he was good for two dem landslides), 2010 Obama/Pelosi/Reid D defeat.
2012??? Many things can happen especially with the R primary starting.
This is ammunition for your argument:
Here is one post on that thread: "Speaker Pelosi, make them force your giant gavel from your cold, dead hands."
More popcorn!
And also good that GWB has not entered the fray, while Obama keeps appearing everywhere.
Really good, he was the secret to Pelosi’s prior success like Samson's hair was . But that GWB hair got cut off Pelosi in early 2009 when Bush went away. Guess Pelosi never realized what a team they were and how much she needed him. Women always do that :)
