A presidential commission on reducing the deficit has recommended freezing basic military pay and housing allowances for three years starting in 2011, according to a draft report of the commission’s recommendations posted online Wednesday.

The move would not affect combat pay, the report said.

A White House spokesman could not be reached for comment.

The recommendation is likely to get a cool reception in Congress.

Instead of making across the board cuts, we should first cut agencies that are not authorized by the Constitution,

Sadly, the Hamiltonians were right about the Constitution. It authorizes (e.g. does not prohibit) pretty much any type of agency. As the Anti-Federalists accuaretly warned, the General Welfare and Necessary and Proper Clauses were, and are, open invitations to expansion of government. More than 200 years later they have been proved prophetic. Wishing it was otherwise doesn't change that reality. We should have never have overturned the Articles of Confederation which, for all its problems, did far more to guarantee limited government.

There are more state employees in NJ than there are active duty Marines.

Why not stop all the automatic pay raises for Congresscritters and give it to the military as a Christmas bonus?

Here is a link with more details on the proposed cuts. There are also almost 4,000 comments that will probably be interesting to read.

If you will check out my link at Comment #44, you will see that our soldiers are not at the head of the list for pain and strain regarding the proposed cuts.

Of course they did.

I have a better idea. How about seizing the assets of all richer than God, Hungarian-born naturalized citizens who helped Nazi’s seize the property of fellow Jews in WWII.

Bambam won’t be affected at all. Not even when the White House is under attack.

This was the plan all along and you could see it coming a mile away. The only part of government doing what they are supposed to, the right way, every day. Why am I not shocked that democrats try to stab us in the neck again. It's '94 all over and this time there is not going to be a rebuild afterward because they spent all the money, all the credit, and all the world's reserves this time.
If you see a Veteran today thank him or her, we might be running out of them before too long.

Congress has paid into the SS system since the early 80s.

If they could draw an unemployment too for the full time they are over there.Maybe they would go for it.

Otherwise.....hell they still have a connection here in America...babies and wives to feed....schools etc. or....did we just take ‘em over there, drop ‘em off in the mountains and say/ you’ll are way too expensive for us,...and we’re cutting your pay and well...you’ll have to catch another ride back home....hope you all make it back.

They did it once before. I’m not sure, but I believe it was under Nixon. Even longevity raises were frozen. I can’t remember how it affected promotions.

What’s more American than our military. We know the reason they are targeted. On Veterans’ Day, this is announced?

It could be deadly to freeze the pay of the brave people who protect our freedoms.

ObamaO wanna create more “militia types?” Not paying the protectors of Freedom will do it.

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, ‘ow’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll.

We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;
While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, fall be’ind”,
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind.

You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires, an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country” when the guns begin to shoot; An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please; An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool — you bet that Tommy sees!
