A hit piece by a liberal blogger about a slip of the tongue by Sarah Palin regarding the crisis on the Korean peninsula has become an international news story that is being spun to impugn Palin's credibility as a potential presidential candidate.
Palin has been dishonestly quoted out of context in dozens of articles and broadcast reports as saying on the Glenn Beck radio show on Wednesday, "We gotta stand with our North Korean allies."
Here, in context, is what Palin actually said (transcription by Kristinn):
Glen Beck: "Sarah you said, you said in the last few days that you are considering a run for president. And uh, polls show that you would probably win the Republican nomination. How would you handle a situation like just developed in, in North Korea?"
Palin: "Well, North Korea, this is stemming from I think a greater problem when we're all sittin' around asking, "Oh no, what are we gonna do?" and we're not having a lot of faith that the White House is gonna come out with a strong enough policy to, um, sanction what it is that North Korea is gonna do. So this speaks to a bigger picture here that certainly scares me in terms our national security policies. But obviously, gotta stand with our North Korean allies. We're bound to by, by treaty."
Beck: "South Korea."
Palin: "We're also bound by, yeah, we're also bound by prudence to stand with our, our South Korean allies. Yes. And, uh, you know to remind North Korea, well, we're not gonna reward bad behavior and we're not gonna walk away. And we do need to press China to do more to increase the pressure on North Korea."
The smear started with liberal blogger Oliver Willis who posted an entry with the title, AUDIO: Sarah Palin: "We Gotta Stand With Our North Korean Allies. The blog post did not transcribe Palin's interview with Beck, it just had a snarky comment, "Genius. Absolute genius. When Glenn Beck is correcting you on foreign policy, well… genius."
Willis included the audio clip in his post which this transcription is based on. As can be seen, it was a simple slip of the tongue. But, because of how Willis disingenuously framed it, the slip has become "truth" to once again be used to smear Palin as ignorant of foreign affairs.
The hit piece was picked up by Mediaite, a site founded by former MSNBCer Dan Abrams, which titled their hit piece, Sarah Palin - North Korean Allies.
Mediaite also posted the audio clip. But even with the evidence that the comment was clearly a slip of the tongue, Mediaite smeared Palin as ignorant by quoting her out of context rather than publishing the entire exchange with Beck.
For good measure, Mediaite brought back a previous smear of Palin that claimed in 2008 when she was selected to be John McCain's running mate she did not know Korea was divided between North and South.
The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense last night with a piece that chided her critics for the smear.
That did not stop the smear from going global, however. A Google News search shows nearly one hundred articles accusing Palin of not knowing that South Korea is our ally.
Wire services, broadcast networks and newspapers across America and the globe have gleefully picked up the smear.
The BBC piled on today with an article that said, "Her slip of the tongue over North Korea will provide more ammunition for critics who say she doesn't have sufficient knowledge or experience for high office."
The Times of India headlined their article, Sarah Palin's Latest Verbal Gaffe - North Korea an Ally.
It is a testament to Palin's global reach and influence that such a simple slip would garner worldwide headlines and be used by her enemies here and abroad to smear her.
However, the truth must be told and the media once more shamed for their duplicitious reporting.
I get that, but do separate out honest criticism of Gov. Palin`s interview performance and foreign policy knowledge from seditious acts. I`ve defended Sarah and will continue to do so.. but she needs to improve her messaging. By doing so, she`ll make herself a more viable candidate.
Was that one of the villages that got itself air-raided?
That's just liberal-speak for "We hate her with all our hearts, but can't find anything of real substance to hold against her"...
Are you referring to the nomination or general election? She may win the nomination but is at a 15% (36% to 51%) deficit with independents and that will hurt her chances in the general. The conservative base will turn out for her, but we're just simply not strong enough in numbers to carry the day.
As for her messaging, yes, her messages are heard, but when people start really paying attention to the 2012 election, Sarah is going to have be able to present her case in specificity and detail. I completely agree with her stances - support to our allies, staunch support of Israel. But she is going to have to get far more specific about those issues...troop strengths, tactics and strategies.
On the upside, she's stronger on domestic policy, and on energy matters especially; I've seen her on-site interviews with Greta Von Susteren about the ANWR and other Alaskan oil/natural gas production, and she has unmatched expertise in that area. She needs to be able to speak just as comfortably about our Afghan policy, Pakistan, China, Russia, Iran, the Korean peninsula, the Middle East, general GWOT issues, etc.
I'm not down on her -- I want her to succeed and as a 28-year military retiree, would be proud to call her Commander-in-Chief. My point is... to get there, her task is to convince those critical independent voters she is an acceptable alternative to what we have now. We in FR know she is, but it's the American electorate she has to win over. And she's not there, yet.
Don't twist my words. I've been an ardent supporter of her from the start. But, feel free to share any current polling data that shows her winning over independents and beating 0bama.

His outright LIES are equally huge – he left Scranton when he was what – 9 years old and he told dims in NE Pennsylvania “I’m a hard coal miner” and mentioned going to a restaurant that closed long after his mommy & daddy relocated the family out of state. Sarah gets on a roll and has a minor slip & the scumbags salivatingly LEAP to point it out. Meanwhile, hatchet-face Hillary says she’s too good to go through TSA scanners or pat-downs, (who’d WANT to look at or touch that thing anyway?)
And the follow up should have been - People that are waiting for China to “do something” about NK...like what, exactly? (That’s has been U.S. NK “policy” since 2006!).
Bush eventually handed everything over to the Chinese because the US was too involved in Iraq to take measures effectively after an earlier provocation. Not to mention the War that allowed the Kim regime time to race ahead and actual develop WMDs lest he also get invaded.
She did not screw up... but obamao has 193,284,627,938,012 times.

It was a quick radio interview spot, one among about 6 she did in a short time frame. Hardly the place to get into the deep policy statements that you are looking for.
Hell, Romney won’t even talk, let alone criticize Obama, I don’t see anybody critiquing any of the other potential nominees and a lot of double standards toward Palin.
There will be plenty of time to get into more detail on policy as candidates announce.

Gov. Palin has tons of time to win over the Independents. You have to win the nomination first. Reagan (not a comparison to Reagan), was in a very similar situation politically with Independents. He was pronounced unelectable, too radical and out of touch.
Independents don’t tune into politics until very late and they are fickle. They voted for Obama in 08, rejected his policies in a massive defection in 2010 midterms.
In 2012, Obama will have a difficult time winning Independents again, because he won’t go to the center like Clinton appeared to do after his beat down.
Romney doesn’t have the image of being lightly qualified and desperately ambitious. The context doesn’t stick. The answers do. And every time her answers come up shallow it only reinforces the “I can’t see her as president” impression.
Barack Obama has brought more power into DC than Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson altogether.
You think the MSM shilled for him in 2008? You haven’t seen nothing compared to whats coming.
If DC has ANY say whatsoever..the Rinocratic Oligarchy isn’t going to let their golden boy go anywhere. Neither will they willingly give back ANY power.
We the People have our work cut out. 2008 was a literal drop in the bucket if we intend to have our country back. It will be a multi-election cycle effort that will require well-delineated gains each time. It will start in each of the local election precincts in each state..because the fraud by which Blue-states keep electing Red candidates is rooted in the community.
Most on FreeRepublic can’t begin to imagine the kind of pre-election runup the powers that be are gonna give ‘Bammy...and what’ve you’ve seen dumped on Palin so far...is just a minimum of what’s to come.
