WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top Senate Democrat said Tuesday he'd move to force a test vote this week on a measure to give tens of thousands of young illegal immigrants a path to legal status.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he'd move to schedule action on the so-called Dream Act, which would give more than 100,000 young immigrants brought to the United States before the age of 16 a chance to become legal residents if they attend college or join the military.

The open-borders progressives’ “DREAM Act” is an electoral nightmare. It’s not just an illegal alien student bailout. It’s a 2.1 million future Democrat voter recruitment drive. The “path to citizenship” dangled by Obama is a superhighway to generations of big government-birthed, identity politics-nursed dependents

Right now the military is open only to legal permanent residents (green card holders) not illegals.

The folks in Arizona are not guilty. It was unions in Nevada that returned this criminal to the Senate. But hey, he’s their criminal.

Just bring'em all in a take away the jobs that were Harry's constituents. Oh well, this commie group has spread the cancer to the 4th stage & nothing can cure it.

If they meet recruiting standards, are willing to join the military, and serve honorably. It may be reasonable to set the recruiting standards a bit higher for those without legal status, but not unreasonably so.

I'm a proponent of legal, controlled immigration. If they are interested in serving our country and can make a positive contribution, I think we should give them precedence over those who would make less of a contribution to our country.

Only to those that have already immigrated lawfully.

I'm not really opposed to opening up military service to those who wish to become residents and eventually citizens, but I'm not sure how you set up an objective system of who you would accept and also limit the numbers so we don't get a flood of recruits with questionable allegiances.

In the current Senate version of the Dream Act the "young immigrants" can be up to 35 years old at the time the bill is enacted into law.

In the house version there is no upper age limit, so 75 year old illegals could qualify if they met the other requirements.

SENATE VERSION

Under the new DREAM Act, immigrants may qualify in part, by meeting the following requirements which have not been finalized by Congress:

All anybody, a single republican even, needs to do to get under Harry’s skin and gum up the works is to deny his unanimous consents.

Yet none of them will do it.

Apparently not — it isn’t being a mercenary to put one’s life on the line for us and just ask that we reward that with recognition of the sacrifice.

I am still quite torn...

What is your problem? Illegal aliens cannot join the US military. Why would we want to bring people into our military who have entered our country illegally, probably committed identity theft, evaded taxes, etc.? How can we do a good background investigation on them? What kind of security clearances would they have?

I don't want an illegal alien to put their life on the line for me or sacrifice anything for this country. They should just leave. I say that as a veteran who served 8 years in the military including a year in Vietnam. Service in the military is an honor and privilege. There is no quid pro quo for that service.
