Unusually cold weather last winter killed Florida's endangered manatees at a record rate, a report said on Friday.

During 2010, a record 699 manatees have died in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Research Institute.

Of those, 244 were attributed to cold weather and many of the 271 undetermined deaths were also likely caused by weather. In most years, the leading cause of manatee deaths is from collisions with power boats

If Charlie Crist hadn’t been so Green and pulled the plug on FPL’s plans to build more power plants, the warm water output from the cooling towers could be saving manatee’s as we speak.

The Manatees would find cooling canals were the power plants would discharge clean but hot water. The manatees would see out those spots when it got cold. The enviros wanted the utilities to cool the water before discharging. The end result is manatees are dying now and it did not happen like this in the past.
