Senate Democrats abruptly pulled down an omnibus spending bill after senior Republicans caught with their hands in the cookie jar deserted the measure in an effort to square themselves with tea party activists and conservatives in the party.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the announcement and signaled he would substitute a short-term spending resolution for the much more detailed year-long $1.1 trillion plus measure which many in the GOP had been quietly rooting for just weeks ago.
With Washington facing a funding cutoff Saturday night, the result is a genuine fiscal crisis at once serious and rich in political farce.
Democrats have only themselves to blame for failing to pass any of the 12 annual appropriations bills that fund the day-to-day operations of the government. At the same time, Republicans contributed mightily to this failure and are going through their own culture war torn between the Senates old-bull pork-barrel ways and the more temperate fiscal gospel of their new tea party allies.

Thanks Nevada for 6 more years of this idiot.
The tactics of totalitarians. Harry POS Reid ALERT! Thanks Nevada /sarcasm
Whack job
Don’t blame me, I’m a Michigander. LOL
Yes now get that Dream/Amnesty crap pulled next.
All that paper wasted ... when a 1 page continuing resolution is that that they “need.”
Somebody needs to tell Stinky Harry and his Commie’RATS that America is broke. B.R.O.K.E. Comprende Stinky? No dinero! Nada!
WTH would he put a big stinking bullseys on every Dem up for relection in 2012?
Too bad the sane states have no way of dumping states who elect the likes of Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Murray, Boxer etc. etc.
I’m suspicious that there may be more to this than is immediately visible. There are still pending bills and back room deals.
Note that McConnel apparently did a 180 on the bill. That means there’s going to be some big time pork in the continuing resolution that will replace it. I wonder what it will be.
Yeah, and then there's the very real possibility that it was crafted to generate outrage, but all the while was intended as a sacrifice to get other things that the Democrats wanted more badly.
Right now, I can't tell whether we prevailed or just acted our part.
Nah... McConnell offered a ONE PAGE bill to replace this 1924 page monstrosity....
ONE PAGE... saying:
Continue funding the government at current levels until Feb. 18, 2011.
BRILLIANT!!!
Dey Bleenkt..
It's still frustrating they have to be pressured to do the right thing, but at least in the end anymore it is happening on some things...even this used to not happen all to often - that's an improvement.
“Too bad the sane states have no way of dumping states who elect the likes of Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Murray, Boxer etc. etc.”
Agreed.
Let them have their own United Socialist States of America and the rest of us can follow the constitution.
IMHO: The earmarks were probably added by RATs to embarrass the Republicans.
