TEHRAN, Iran – Security forces flooded Iran's capital in a warning against possible unrest as fuel prices surged 400 percent Sunday under plans to sharply cut government subsides and ease pressure on an economy struggling with international sanctions.

The so-called economic "surgery" has been planned for months, but was repeatedly delayed over worries of a repeat of gas riots in 2007 and serious political infighting during the standoff with the West over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Under the new system, each personal car receives 60 liters (16 gallons) of subsidized fuel a month costing 40 cents a liter ($1.50 a gallon) — up from the just 10 cents a liter.

OK....I am a little confused. Obviously, 40 cents is 4 times greater than 10 cents. However, going from 10 to 20 cents is a 100% markup. Isn't it really "only" a 300% increase...? You would still have to account for the original price, if I am not mistaken.

We should help Iran out with a few dozen well placed blockbusters on their refinery.

Would have been correct if they said fuel prices surged to 400% of their previous value.

If they’d put all their time and money into building refineries instead of nukes, they wouldn’t be in this mess. The few Iranian citizens that actually understand what happened have got to be furious.

Hopefully the people of Iran will find the wherewithall to do some surgery on their government. I’m afraid they will have to do it without much outside help though.

I think there are a lot of choke points in the Iranian economy other than gasoline. The country is very susceptible to a blockade. Stopping ALL imports and exports would bring the regime to its knees in short order.

I am sure the gov’t will do a spin ~ starting with recovery and then stimulus , and ultimately blend in a good portion of the big satan.

Makes way too much sense. Just like if we had developed the security barrier along our border when the a-hole gubbermint said it would, we wouldn't have to worry about drug gangs killing ranchers and BP agents on our own soil.

Some things are just too complex for our Ivy League educated ruling class to figure out. Must be the same over there.

You know your system doesn’t work if you’ve got to enforce it with the military.

I was just pointing out what I think is a fact. I don’t think Hussein will do it.

Of course Obama’s name is kept out of it...some wouldn’t like that he’s cutting off gas to the people of Iran...

Joe, you’re correct, there’s no individual nation or coalition for it. Also, a blockade is an act of war. Plays right into the hands of the regime.

You might just as well say that if Obama had spent his time drilling for oil in Alaska and off our coasts and anywhere else that it exists in this country, We wouldnt have to import oil and export a Trillion dollars a year out to the Opec nations.

We also would haven’t have need for Chinese windmills.

Well, we wouldn't want to worry about committing an "act of war" against such a peace loving regime as the one is Iran.

Not as if they committed an act of war in 1979 and have been pursuing it ever since.

No, we wouldn’t. It would galvanize the tenuous elements of their nation with the current leadership. Your sarcasm doesn’t change reality.
