Citizen of nowhere: The story of one undocumented student
Las Vegas Sun ^ | Jan. 3, 2011 | April Corbin

Posted on 01/03/2011 1:44:36 AM PST by moonshinner_09

When Jessica was selected as Student of the Year in eighth grade, she should have celebrated this goldest of gold stars. Instead, she slammed doors, bawled her eyes out and let her parents know she would hate them for the rest of her life.

What they were doing to her wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair. She’d been a model student, and now her middle school wanted to reward her by footing half the bill for a trip to Washington, D.C. — home to all the presidents whose birthdays and middle names she’d memorized.

Her parents wouldn’t let her go. They said they had their reasons, none of which would suffice for a 13-year-old who really, really, really wanted to get on that plane.

It’s a scene that plays out in homes across America — the battle between a teenager with a desire and parents saddled with responsibility — but for Jessica this fight was more than that. It was the moment she realized she was not like her classmates, not like the 50 students going on this class trip without her.

It was the first time she fully grasped the words undocumented immigrant — and understood that they applied to her.

“Up until then I realized there was this issue with other people, but in my mind it wasn’t me,” says Jessica, now 22, whose parents kept her home because they were afraid of what might happen if someone in airline security discovered her immigration status. “I knew we’d traveled here, but we couldn’t possibly be illegal or doing anything wrong. When you’re at that age, it’s like, ‘My mom and dad are awesome; they would never do anything bad.’ ”

The immigration bill now in existence was enacted to prevent the kind of problems we have now but the feds did not enforce it so what would this Dream Act do? Not a thing, it will make all these illegals citizens and a new group of illegals will invade the US wishing to get amnesty also.

No driver's license? No credit cards? No Social Security Card, no nothin? Bummer, Jessica!

I'm so bummed you won't be able to take a scholarship that one of my three grand daughters might have been able to get were it not for people like you - illegal. I'm so bummed you won't even try to get a job now. Maybe you can just go on welfare or something. Maybe you can ask Obama how he got a SS card from Connecticut, a state in which he's never lived. Maybe you can also ask him how he's gotten along without a birth certificate showing he was born here. And the driver's license? Give me a friggin break, girl...you know as well as anyone else they (illegals) get them all the time, or just drive without them....maybe you should take some spanish lessons and go back to your motherland.

I’m all in tears, now before the special exception crowd shows up. Put her and her illegal parents, etc, on the bus and send them home. I’ll wave bye and put up the tissue.

“Undocumented student” is sort of like a check with “insufficient funds”. Both draw on funds provided by others.

the battle between a teenager with a desire and parents saddled with responsibility except that the parents weren't responsible enough to enter this country legally.

So they're all basically children with desires.

I would like to see Congress subpoena April Corbin (the author of this story), so she could come before a committee to explain why she supports illegal immigration and the subversion of US law.

I think if these "journalists" find themselves sitting before Congress every time they write a story promoting illegal immigration, they will wise up and stop doing so. It will get rather expensive very quickly!

No, bring Jessica and her parents forward to testify how they scammed the system, ignored warnings and/or evaded authorities all the time it took to accomplish an American education for their illegal daughter.

Grill them as to why they witheld information from their daughter.

Ask Jessica if she never ? questioned her citizenship in this day and age of alien/citizenship conversation(s) ?

And after they have done all that, send her back to Mexico along with the PARENTS who did this to her. I am sure she can get documentation there.

Immigration can only be resolved by going after the Employers of illegals.

They never intended to enforce them. They are using all of us to get their greedy pig fists on our money.

I agree with your post. We can’t get misty-eyed over every sweet looking little illegal immigrant with a sad story.

How about the sad stories of our citizens who can’t get jobs because of these illegals?

BTW, there’s a poll on the page of the newspaper and only 4 people have voted on it.

We need to let the reporter see how this country’s citizens feel about the issue by voting on that poll.

She can thank her parents for her heartbreak and her dilema. That is part of the consequences of living a life outside the law.

She should also consider the fact that she and her family did more than cross a border illegally. They are guilty of ongoing theft.

Since their arrival they have been stealing services paid for by taxpayers. Every day she went to school they were stealing from taxpayers under false pretenses by lying and pretending to be citizens.

And the advisors in college who helped her play the system should be horsewhipped and jailed.

The taxpayers and innocent citizens are the real victims here. The culprits are people like her parents, herself and people within the system who try to spin opinion to portray the people doing wrong as the victims.

I went to vote on the poll and got this message:

Would you support passage of the Dream Act? We didn't record your vote,

I guess thye didn't like the way the poll was going so they quit recording votes.

Sometimes parents screw over their kids. It’s just a fact of life. This is just one way they do it.

Yet one more instance of ICE knowing exactly who and where some illegal aliens are and nothing is going to happen to them. I don't see why this young, illegally present woman is worried.

She might want to consider a quickie gringo, or negro if that's her predilection, wedding so she become legal. /sarcasm
