Arizona education chief moves to ban ethnic studies in Tucson schools
CNN ^ | 1/4/2011 | Michael Martinez

Arizona schools superintendent John Huppenthal has told the Tucson district to stop teaching its controversial Mexican-American studies program or face losing $15 million in annual state aid under a new law, he said Tuesday.

Huppenthal told CNN he was backing this week's decision by exiting state superintendent Tom Horne giving the state's second largest district 60 days to comply with a new 2011 law banning certain ethnic studies programs in public schools.

Horne is now Arizona's new attorney general, and Huppenthal was sworn in Monday as the newly elected Arizona schools superintendent. Both men are Republicans.

The new schools law is the latest controversy in a state already roiled by an immigration crackdown law, known as SB 1070, that is being challenged on constitutional grounds in federal court. The Arizona-Mexico border is considered the nation's busiest for illegal immigration.

Tucson school board member Adelita Grijalva charged that the new law provided no due process and was unconstitutional. She said the new law was part of an anti-immigrant political climate in the Arizona statehouse. She and Huppenthal said they expected this new law to also end up in court.

"People of color in the state of Arizona are under attack," Grijalva told CNN. "We're basically going from one battle to the next."

The law authorizes the state superintendent to stop any ethnic studies classes that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment toward a race or class of people, are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.

In written findings Monday, Horne said the Tucson program violated all four criteria.

Go Huppenthal!

He ran on bringing back the teachings of The Constitution and The Founding Fathers to schools. I hope he continues on the march to weed out the liberal propaganda.

How do ethnic studies prepare a student for life after finishing school? But it preparing a student for adult life was the goal of high school, most of its cirriculum would have to be abolished.

Those kids are being taught that the SW of the USA was stolen from Mexico and that Mexicans are oppressed by the White Man. Basically exactly what minorities are taught by the Dems. But this is flagrant and within the walls of the Tuscon United School District.

I think you are missing the point. School isn't about preparing for life after finishing school. It's about understanding how each and every class of people is used by someone else and as a result everyone is a victim. As a result, the only thing that kids need to know to get their diploma is that everyone is a victim and the only way to right such evil injustices is for the benevolent government to step in and make things right.

Jeesh - aren't you keeping up with the academic times?

Wonderful news, and a model for all states. Encouraging ethnic separatism is a cancer, pure and simple.

Unless the perps are fired, it will continue. They will simply change the name of the class to something nice and mundane-sounding, and continue on.

I doubt if there has been more than a handful of movies or TV shows made in the last 30 years which don’t violate one or more of that laws’ ideas.

It took only 3 replies for somebody to get it right. Good for you. This is first and foremost a waste of student time. If they want to check out the latest in ethnic studies palp let them do it on their own time. Math, science, computer science, english and perhaps some business or vocational training are what is required to produce functioning adults. Opinions don’t put food on the table or boost the GDP.

Easy! That sham "Raza Studies" sheepskin is valid for getting a govt job, especially when coupled with minority set-aside status.

Every wonder why so many govt workers are so stupid (for their given position,) and convert this awkwardness into sullen behavior toward us mere supplicant taxpayers?

They "qualified" for federal or state or city employment based on "ethnic studies" degrees, in "colleges" where nobody ever in history failed in those majors. Plus ethnic skin, you have the golden ticket to govt employment for life. Even if you can't do 8th grade math or English.

Horne made compelling arguments about his position on Greta’s show last night. His objects to the “ethnic studies” programs concern the extreme nature and radicalism practiced by the agitating educators involved.

Horne is not against what the majority of citizens would consider to be balanced ethnic studies programs.

High school was a waste of my time. Four years of my life taken away and all I had to show for it was a diploma which did nothing to help me get a job.

While this is not another reason to homeschool in the usual sense, it is something concerning the public schools which deserves attention.

It’s good to see someone taking a step in a positive direction in public education, although it shouldn’t have gotten to the point it was at in the first place.

Good to see someone with some backbone.
