Republicans introduce bill to eliminate presidential 'czars' By Michael O'Brien - 01/06/11 04:15 PM ET

A group of House Republicans introduced a bill on Wednesday to rein in the various "czars" in the Obama administration.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and 28 other House Republicans introduced legislation to do away with the informal, paid advisers President Obama has employed over the past two years.

The legislation, which was introduced in the last Congress but was not allowed to advance under Democratic control, would do away with the 39 czars Obama has employed during his administration.

The bill defines a czar as "a head of any task force, council, policy office within the Executive Office of the President, or similar office established by or at the direction of the President" who is appointed to a position that would otherwise require Senate confirmation.

Republicans had complained about the president's use of czars to help advance his agenda in Congress. In particular, the GOP had harped about the personal history of Van Jones, the president's czar for "green jobs," over past comments Jones had made about Fox News came to light. Jones eventually resigned.

Another prominent czar over the past year was Carol Browner, the president's energy and environmental adviser. She helped head up efforts in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the ultimately unsuccessful effort for an energy and climate bill from Congress.

Republicans introduced several bills to eliminate czars in the last Congress, but similar legislation could conceivably advance in the House now that the GOP controls the chamber.

"We haven’t gotten an indication of an exact timeline for committee action, considering that the bill was just filed yesterday," said Scalise spokesman Stephen Bell. "We hope to have this discussion in the near future as the congressman works to pursue all the bills he has introduced in the 112th Congress."

“Czar is a Slavic term derived from the Latin word Caesar, meant emperor in the European medieval sense of the term, that is, a ruler who claims the same rank as a Roman emperor, with the approval of another emperor or a supreme ecclesiastical official (the Pope or the Ecumenical Patriarch).”

Good start but please don't forget to hammer the Democrat communists in the Senate. We need the votes there. Dig and expose them. Force embarrassment. House to set up investigation on every one that is corrupt.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.......

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation

(Time for Congress to also read the Declaration of Independence)

Let’s not forget that it’s up to us to cheer them on and let them know that we appreciate everything they’re doing.
We need to write, call, e-mail our kudos and agreement every time they do us proud. That will go a long way to build up their resolve and keep them on the right track.

It’s going to be mind-boggling what the MessSM and the Democrats are going to throw at these people. They need encouragement daily.

Someone should warn them that, in all probability, a few battalions of call-girls, male prostitutes and undercover grunts have already been dispatched to insure their downfall. Americans are getting less and less tolerant of such scandals. Should lawmakers be held to a higher standard? YES! Along with sports figures, pop stars and anyone else who is trusted to set an example for society.

A lot depends on this Congress. Let’s help them all we can.

FDR started the sordid practice- who else? It grew until Bush 2 at 32 and now Obummer at 39. (Reagan had one)

Time’s up - the sooner the better.

Introduce a bill outlawing communism and socialism as subversive ideologies antithetical to Americanism, and I’ll really feel all warm and fuzzy...

But hey...one step at a time.

W had 32 czars. Obama has 39. Czars are another thing we can thank FDR for. FDR had 11, they largely fell out of favor until Clinton brought them back in large numbers with 8.

Reagan had just 1 czar, the drug czar.

I would agree. Read the Constitution. Particularly the separation of powers doctrine. Congress can’t tell the President which advisors to hire (even if I don’t like them). Inside the executive branch he can establish whatever positions he wants. I don’t like any of his appointees, I sure don’t like the term Czar but I don’t see the power vested in Congress to do anything about it.

YEESSSS, go for the jugular of the Progressives. One that needs to gois this one:
From Time Mag:

DeParle comes to the job with a wide range of private-sector connections, some of which could prove problematic. For years she worked as a health-care adviser at JPMorgan Partners, a private equity firm, and CCMP Capital Advisers, another private investment firm with significant health-care holdings. She has served as a director on companies as varied as Cerner, which develops electronic medical records, and DaVita, which provides dialysis service. The companies and their investments could well be effected by the direction of health reform, which will necessarily seek to reduce costs in some areas, while increasing investments in others. (death panels?)

and this:

she has become a highly sought-after corporate, academic and foundation consultant, earning enough money with her husband, New York Times reporter Jason DeParle, to buy a $3 million house in the Washington suburbs in 2007.

It’s kind of ironic that the first “czar” (Director of the White House Drug Abuse Policy a.k.a. the Drug Czar) was put in place by Ronald Reagan.

You're mistaken. FDR had 11 czars. Since Truman left, only Ike and Reagan had 1 czar. All other presidents had 2-3 until Clinton had 8.

They exploded under W to 32.
