White House tightening of Mexico border gun rules delayed (Barf alert!)

A planned Obama administration clampdown on Mexico border gun dealers which would require them to report multiple assault rifle sales has been delayed by the White House amid stiff opposition from the powerful gun lobby.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said last month it would tighten reporting requirements to help agents gather intelligence to target smugglers running high-powered rifles to Mexico, where 30,000 people have been killed in drug cartel violence since 2006.

The measure would require around 8,500 gun dealers in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas to report sales of two or more high-powered semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines to the same person within a five day period.

The White House Office of Management and Budget was expected to approve the emergency rule change on Wednesday. But an official with direct knowledge told Reuters that "ATF's information collection request is still under review," and declined further comment until the "deliberative phase is concluded."

Gun control activists said they hoped the delay was just procedural.

"We have been very disappointed with the Obama administration for most of its first two years in office with regard to the gun issue," said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

"We're hopeful that this is just some standard bureaucratic delay, we haven't heard anything to the contrary," he added.

The move to boost ATF's ability to target gun traffickers comes as Mexican authorities are struggling to contain raging drug violence south of the border, where shootouts, beheadings and torture killings are a daily occurrence.

About 90 percent of the crime guns seized and traced in Mexico last year were initially sold in the United States, according to ATF. Investigators say around three-quarters of traces lead back to sales in the four states flanking the...

About 90 percent of the crime guns seized and traced in Mexico last year were initially sold in the United States,”

This sounds like bullcr@p. Most of the seized weapons I’ve seen appear to be fully auto weapons and heavier purchased on the international black market. Maybe they only “traced” those particular type guns that could be purchased legally in the US.

At any rate, just another excuse to erode constitutional rights due to pepe calderon’s inability to deal with problems back home and our unwillingness to control the border.

I agree that this is B.S., however I believe that a large, or significant portion of these weapons were sent to the Mexican government by the United States to combat drug related crime. Instead of being in the hands of the Mexican soldiers, these weapons were sold on the black market or even traded directed with the cartels.

Actually, ATF never said that, and even the Washington Post, the small periodical that'd sponsored the original feature articles never said that.

They actually said something else.

I don't think Obama wants his boys called to the House to discuss this particular matter since the reality is that FEW weapons of any kind that are used in Mexico can be traced to anywhere.

I also don't think Obama and his running dog lackeys want to have any of their people before the House 'splainin' why they want to spend more money keeping Americans from selling guns to Mexicans than just sealing up the border to keep those Mexicans out!

And there is the report that atf took many of the guns across the border themselves to pad the numbers.

Maybe this has something to do with this morning's breaking story of BATF agents assisting with gun smuggling shipments into Mexico to boost their reporting stats.

Or did that story get buried?

We’re not going to enforce the border, so every gun salesman near the border is going to have to be treated like a criminal.

What government agency is more hated than the BATF and E? Especially among gun owners. Please take a minute and look at this:
