"Just Kill Him" Controversial Video of Police Shooting Family Dog
KTLA ^ | January 4, 2011 | Fox News Online

DES MOINES, WA -- In November police officers tased, then shot and killed a 120-pound Newfoundland named Rosie.

The shooting sparked both a community vigil for the dog and an independent review of the officers' actions.

Although initiall reports were that the dog was acting aggressively when she escaped from her fenced yard and was spotted roaming neighborhood streets, video taken from the patrol car dash-cams may cast the shooting in a different light.

Warning: Videos contain graphic sounds and language.

The videos, released by Des Moines Police show the dog being tazed by an officer, then running away. In another video you hear an officer fire his gun, presumably hitting the dog, then another officer saying "Nice".

Your “fact” is an assumption. Most dogs do not get out everyday. The cops were called because someone saw a loose dog and didn’t have the sense to call animal control.

No one has made that argument. However, the cops ARE responsible for declaring “Just kill him”, and shooting a dog unnecessarily.

Bad cops need to go; they give the Good Cops a bad name, and make it harder for them to do their jobs.

Don’t defend bad cops.

Founded in 1887 by former residents of Des Moines, IA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Des_Moines,_Washington

I used to live near there (later my property was annexed into the city), quite a beautiful city. Just south of Sea-tac airport.

Gary Ridgeway (the Green River killer) lived there for much of the time he was committing his crimes.

I can’t bring myself to watch the video, but I really doubt that a newfoundland would be anywhere near that aggressive to justify execution

Thanks for the info in post 25.

I should know better than to go assuming some moron reporter used WA incorrectly, instead of WI.

WA it is.

OK...this gets worse....

From the police report (the shooting officer):
....I was given the OK and shot one round from my department issued Colt M-4. The dog immediately fell to the ground without making any noise. I approached the dog and observed it's eyes were rolled back and it had heavy labored breathing. I fired another round from my rifle, this time I fired a round into the dog's center mass, and it began to yelp. I fired another round into the same general location and the dog sat up and began to move around. I fired one last time into the same general portion of the body, and the dog immediately laid down ceasing all movements."

This was a torture-killing....

Disagree.

A torture killing would have been one or two shots leaving the animal in pain; only to die hours later.

If anything, the officer was merciful in insuring the dog was dead, dead, dead.

We have owned two Newfies, both males. A very big black and a smallish (110 lb) landseer.

It is very hard to envision any breed being as gentle and non-aggressive as them. Really, they are amazingly docile and friendly.

To consider one (especially a female) a threat is simply nonsense.

Killing a pet/dog in the context of a no-knock gestapo raid is bad enough...but this??

It must be recognized that these officers must also pass judgement on humans they encounter in their job.

Would you want an officer with their mindset to quickly judge how you, your family, your neighbors would be treated by them?

You are making a lot of assumptions with your comments.

IF, and that’s a big IF, what you’re assuming is true, then why did the neighborhood hold a vigil for the dog and its owners?

If the dog were a nuisance as you assume, then the neighbors should be applauding the cops, right?

Criticizing the owners for permitting their dog to roam and be a nuisance, right?

There’s only one problem. The opposite is what’s happening.

There were witnesses stating that the dog was being chased by children in the neighborhood and the dog didn’t display any aggressiveness towards the children.

The only time the dog apparently [cops versions here] did was after it was tased and chased into hiding by the police. There were many witness statements that contradict the police version of events.

Is discharging a firearm in a residential area and subsequently killing a dog really a prudent thing to do when the dog has hidden itself from its attackers?

Really? Was that the only option? I seriously doubt it.

Center mass shots to a large dog laying on the ground would be gut shots in my book. Not very merciful. The first shot, if it was really, really necessary should have been a head shot.
