Bachmann: Government Shutdown A Liberal 'Bugaboo' (VIDEO)
TPM ^ | 2/14/11 | Eric Kleefeld

Posted on 02/14/2011 3:10:03 PM PST by pissant

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), the Tea Party star and possible presidential candidate, says that there is no chance of a government shutdown.

"That's not going to happen because that won't serve anyone's interest," Bachmann said in an interview with Newsmax. "That's a bugaboo that the liberals right now are trying to throw out to scare the American people. No one is going to agree to a government shutdown. That will not happen. So let's just take that off the table."

Earlier in the interview, Bachmann also said Congress had to make sure to forbid any funding for the implementation of health care care reform, "Which would mean that we would be repealing Obamacare for the next two years, until we can elect a new president that will actually vote out Obamacare."

And she also added: "So I think we need something to change the arc of history. And if we don't fund Obamacare and if we don't fund cap and trade, that will change the arc of history."

Here is the full video of the interview:

Actually, it would be wonderful political theater if it happened. Because they wouldn’t shut down all of it, they would keep the parts going that you really need.

And then you let that sink in. There isn’t much government that you really need but the only way to make that point is to provoke, and allow, a “government shutdown”. And then refuse to panic or to hurry to get it back on line.

Thanks for posting.. I remember when they threatened this during the Clintoon years. I was in the Army at Ft Sill.. it is one of their desperate tactics that only those without independent thought would believe. Like that reporter Rush had on today who could not get the Egyptian folks to worship Obummer

I hope Bachmann doesn’t mean that they will pass continuing resolutions, to keep everything going until they agree on a budget. Because that could continue for the next two years.

How about we only shut down PARTS of the government?

The Department of Education. The Department of Agriculture. The EPA. PBS subsidies. I’m sure we can think of a few more.

The Leftist MSM still had a virtual monopoly on the news when they blamed the GOP for Clinton's shut down of the government.
Dem day be gone forever! Not only does the new conservative media have almost as much clout but enjoys a heck of a lot more credibility in the eyes of the general public.

I only hope the current GOP realizes this.

I agree, why not shut it down and find out what we need and what is irrelevant. Start with the energy dept, education dept. and EPA.

At some point, though, I think she is mistaken. Obama will eventually decide that he can be like Bill Clinton, and veto spending bills to shut down the government, while blaming the shutdown on the Republicans.

There is a twist this time, though. Obama will use Harry Reid to do the brinkmanship in the senate. Basically to create a totally different bill, then try to get back a whole bunch of funding in “reconciliation” meetings.

So it is critical that the Republican leadership’s feet be held to the fire to not cave in during these reconciliation meetings. Reid will be running back and forth between the senate and the White House like a used car salesman, “trying to persuade my boss to give you the discount I want to give you.” Which is, of course, utter hooey.

The way for the Republicans to greet this is with intolerance. Each and every time the Democrats demand fewer cuts or tax increases, the Republicans should just add on even more spending cuts.

“You refuse to agree to $100B in spending cuts? Okay, how do you feel about $300B in spending cuts? You want to play games? How about $500B in spending cuts, smart guys? You want even more?”

And since both Harry Reid and Obama are naturally cowardly, they will probably agree to all the cuts the Republicans want. At least at the reconciliation meeting.

Then, when the bill is sent to Obama, he will veto it and shut down the government. Why? Because he was lying again. So the Republicans should be ready for this with a new bill. One that takes an axe to the federal government.

Imagine the rebel yell going up in the land if the Republicans announce they are returning all federal land takings, especially in the West, to the States, except for a few, small, national crown jewels, like Yosemite and Yellowstone?

There are any number of fires they can light underneath the “light bearer” president.

The budget is passed piecemeal — there is not exact correspondence between Department and bill but it’s close...there are some anomalies, such as NEA being in Interior....

The house continuing resolution to fund government operations includes all Obamacare funding with no parts left out.

I live outside of DC, when it snows they tell non-essential government employees to stay home.

If they are non-essential why don’t they just stay home for good?

I suspect that if they closed the government but continued to send out the entitlement checks, very few people would notice it.
