Trouble for Tress?

Yahoo Sports! article claims Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel knew Terrelle Pryor and others had sold merchandise months before the school was made aware of it By WTVN Sports Department Monday, March 7, 2011 A Yahoo! sports report, (link below) posted Monday night, claims that Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel knew of Terrelle Pryor and other players selling gear and awards last April---more than eight months before OSU director of Athletics Gene Smith said the school knew of it.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ys-osuprobe030711

The Yahoo! story, authored by Dan Wetzel and Charles Robinson, reports that an anonymous source, says Tressel was told in April of 2010 that some players, including Terrelle Pryor, were selling items to Edward Rife, who owns a Columbus tattoo parlor.

According to that Yahoo! source, Tressel said he would notify Ohio State officials and encourage an investigation. But during the December 23 press conference, when the University announced an NCAA suspension for Pryor and five other players, Director of Athletics Gene Smith said his department was not made aware of the situation until earlier that month.

The Yahoo! story indicates that Tressel could face major NCAA violations if he is found to have known about violations but did not report them. It also potentially could mean the 2010 season would have to be vacated.

Ohio State officials are aware of the report, but have not commented.

Ohio State is one of the top job generators in the state through its industry and research partnerships. In southern Ohio, Ohio State’s Endeavor Center has guided new business growth, resulting in $50 million in economic impact. Ohio State Medical Center’s $1 billion expansion will create 5,000 construction jobs. And a College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences initiative has been helping small businesses thrive in communities across Ohio.

The money is NOT all on campus.
Yes I am an Ohioan and OSU alum. You are obviously one of those people who look for the bad in everything and see nothing good. How sad for you. You can name every football player who has done wrong, and you won’t come close to the numbers who have gone on to become doctors, teachers, coaches, firemen, police officers, businessmen and leaders in their communities. I can recommend some reading if you are interested, but the information would ruin your cynical views.

As for recruiting thugs, I give you Christopher Carter, Louis Irizzary, Ira Guilford, Santonio Holmes among others

Art Schlichter?

Art Schlichter?Yeah, but she wanted examples of thugs recruited by Tressel.

Art should have never been let out of prison the last time, and he is a perfect example of how all you have to say in Columbus is "Go Bucks!" and you get away with almost anything. The infiltration of the football program into the fabric of Columbus and Central Ohio, has IMO, been more detrimental than beneficial. It's a city of 800,000 dominated by an obsession for a football factory. No wonder outsiders think it's a cowtown.

P.S. Ohio State, including the Ohio State Medical Center, is one of the biggest employers in Columbus and is one of the biggest research institutions in the world.

You think I don't know that? It doesn't mean they haven't done a great deal of harm to the rest of the area. They truly are the tail that wags the dog in Columbus.

Regurgitating press releases from Gordon Gee's office is a waste of time.

You're an Ohioan, but do you (or did you) live in the Columbus area? ( I mean as an adult taxpayer, not just as a student.) Because people who are from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo, etc don't get it and they never will.

Indeed, this is why I think Bruce Pearl may be gone as Tennessee men's basketball coach after the current season ends.

Going 8-8 in the SEC won't help.

Do you live in Columbus? OSU has done great harm to the city. Waaaay too much influence, straight into the Mayor's office and city council; don't even get me started on how they manipulate business.

Revenue? Yes, businesses ride their coat tails, but OSU football's $100 million in annual revenue is kept on campus, while our taxes that support said campus go up every year, as does tuition.

Ohio State generates more income producing activities than virtually any other entity in the Columbus area. OSU is a generator, not a drain.

They have waaay too much influence in this town. Yeah, they spin off some cash into the area, big cash, but is it worth the price? Downtown Columbus development is targeted by OSU so it can protect its turf. They try to stifle progress in the rest of the community if they feel it poses a “threat.” Google, “OSU-Nationwide-Dimon McFerson-John McConnell-Greg Lashutka-NHL” and you’ll get the picture.

They truly are the tail that wags the dog in Columbus.

Interesting image. If OSU is the tail, what is the dog? Polaris (shop 'til you drop)? Easton Town Center (more shopping)? The late City Center (used-to-be shopping)? COSI (bring big bucks)? Columbus Museum of Art (please)? Franklin Park Conservatory (bring a knife or a gun)? There aren't world-class attractions, you know.

Columbus is a three-note town. University. Government. Lawyers. That's. About. It. No mountains. No ocean (no, not the Scioto River). World's lousiest weather, except for maybe Cleveland.

The dog is the Mayor’s office, Columbus City Council, the media, various school districts in Central Ohio, MORPC, and a myriad of others.

OK, I see where you’re going with this. Can’t argue about those things. I’d throw in the police dept. as well.

Columbus: 6 feet of snow with an inch and a half of ice on top!

GO BUCKS!!

And there's blame to be placed with the "Titans" as they're called. Wexner is the 800 pound poofter in the room. He's the reason Gee is back here (to do Wexner's bidding.) The Wolfe family is another enabler.

Let's face it, if you aspire to be a big shot in the civic and/or commercial aspects of Central Ohio but have no ties to OSU, you're in a big hole that you have to climb out of. No other university in a city of comparable size to Columbus has that kind of pull, not Harvard, not Stanford, not Pitt, not UC or Xavier.

Also, look at the pathetic attempts at local businesses, small and large, to identify with OSU. The one that really fascinates me is Rick Rosati, of Rosati Windows on TV stressing that he's an OSU alum. Who cares? Well, sadly, enough apparently that he believes it affects his bottom line.

When Big Bear was in business, they tried to hitch their wagon to John Cooper’s star, IIRC. Lot of good that did them.

Kroger has done the same with Tressel. Archie Griffin has shilled for every business in Franklin County over the past 30 years. Herbstreit on TV every hour for Byers.

And we all know that if you played even a couple of seasons for OSU, and kept your nose clean, some insurance agent, car dealership, real estate developer or radio/TV station is going to give you a gig, "just because." I mean, Demetrious Stanley and his pimp suits on Channel 6? Pretty embarrassing, although not as embarrassing as John Corby having Schlichter on his show twice a week last fall.

They're still hiding a lot. Think about it...The lawyer who e-mailed Tressel should be disbarred. As an officer of the court, HE violated the confidentiality of the case. At the same time, Tressel was under no legal obligation to maintain confidentiality. The minute he finished reading those e-mails, he should have called Smith, Gee and OSU's head counsel. So why didn't Tressel do that? That's a huge question. The "I was protecting the players" excuse is crap.

Tressel should be out on his kiester.

I didn’t see the presser tonight. The wife and I were out walking in this “warm” weather tonight. Therefore, I do not know all of the details. But I’m sure there is more to this situation than what the public knows right now.

Really embarrassing. I used to be a fan of OSU in my younger days (in fact, I have taken undergrad and graduate classes at OSU), but over the last 15 years or more I have become quite disillusioned with OSU, the BCS and NCAA. It’s all about money. Get rid of the athletic scholarships and return to real student-athletes at universities.

Tressel came very close to breaking down several times. He looked like he wished the floor would open up and swallow him. Smith was terse, trying to deflect a lot of questions. Gee was, as usual, a total buffoon.

Get the popcorn ready...this is just the beginning. Federal drug trafficking and money laundering cases usually bring a bunch of people down. This one will be no exception.
