Japan radiation leaking "directly" into air: IAEA
Reuters ^ | 3/15/2011 | Fredrik Dahl

Japan has told the U.N. nuclear watchdog radioactivity was being released "directly" into the atmosphere from the site of an earthquake-stricken reactor and that it had put out a fire at a spent fuel storage pond there.

Soros groups and anti-nuke activists. Trust nothing right now. Least of all the findings of a UN org formerly headed by Mohammed el Baradei as reported by Reuters.

Someone in Tokyo posted a live feed of their Geiger Counter on U Stream. The level has consistently registered around 29cpm all day. The same reading you’d find in Northern New Jersey. In Denver, the average reading is over 50cpm.

Freepers just like what agrees with their preconceptions. Any poll or news or other poster that doesn’t agree is a heretic to be belittled or destroyed.

Folks carry baggage here, how many and which are real adds to the journey,, life experiences and teachings and all aside, there is no shortage of opinions here for sure regardless, some fly, some flop, some get interesting, some get the Zot. and Yes, some are biased to a degree, some severely so,, not sure we roast heretics these days tho .. anymore.. maybe we need a beer summit on it. :-)

That’s what I’m talking about there are A LOT of mixed messages here. It’s kind of hard to figure out if we are over reacting or not.

It just seems to me that the pro nuclear energy people are saying a little too soon that everything is safe and okay. Just for the record I’m pro nuclear energy, but I do understand it can be dangerous. What has happen to Japan will not change my view on the use of nuclear energy. I just want to know the truth of what is going on. I have hard time trusting any government is telling the truth since they lie so much. When the government keeps changing their story line... I don’t know who to believe? Like I said before time will tell.

Of course, if they're confusing milliseiverts (mSv) with microsieverts (μSv), who knows what the hell's going on there.

” It means radioactive particles (alpha, beta, gamma emitters) have been released to the atmosphere. “

Do you have a link for that?? Every report I’ve seen - even the “end of the world panic” ones - talk about ‘radiation’ or ‘radioactivity’ being released - but no reports of significant particle (fallout) production or release.....

We have a Live Thread in Breaking News for the events in Japan. Please post information such as this on that thread so we can keep track of all updates in one place while things are happening so rapidly. A separate thread for each news item tends to get quickly buried. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

But seriously if you are 8 km away from the plant this is big time serious bad news. If you are 8,000 km away in Los Angeles not so much

Radiation levels as measured at the the plant gate seem to be in the 400 micro-sievert range. That is a level you wouldn't want to live and work in but you could safely pass through it.

the amount of radiation passing through a specific area is inversely proportional to the square of the distance of that area from the energy source. So, using Google earth and its ruler, a very conservative estimate would place the gate 1km from the plant. At 8 km away, you will be facing .0004/(8^2) = .0004/64 = 6.25 micro-sieverts.

Since the only possible gate I see from Google Earth is perhaps 100m from the plant, in this case, the unit of measure becomes meters. 8km = 8000 meters. so, the levels at 8000meters when readings 100m from the plant are 400 micro-sieverts is .0004/(8000^2) = .0004/64,000,000 = 6.25 pico-sieverts - an amount that would be lost in the noise of normal background radiation.

I would not be surprised if as many people were hurt fighting over iodine pills as by radiation from the damaged plants.

By the way, how many firefighters have been injured or killed fighting the LNG & refinery fires? Other fires caused by the earthquake?

That’s not how fallout works though. It’s not just 1 source of it like you’re acting, the stuff can and does spread which emits radiation from wherever it goes.

It’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the “We’re all gonna die!” news reports.

Brings back memories doesn’t it? And looks like Iran was for weaponry after all. He and the rest of the IAEA said no way, it was peaceful use of atomic technology... Wow. What dumb asses.

You’re both wrong though. The fallout itself travels and emits. It’s not just a single source that is still and you’re safe at x distance. The radiated dust comes to you and emits locally.
