From the BBC live blog:
2230: The BBC's Caroline Wyatt says the coalition's hope is that by striking hard and fast now, the forces still loyal to Col Gaddafi will think again - and perhaps so will the colonel himself.
2228: BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt says the NATO base at Naples is understood to be the central command for the military operation. She adds that Britain's air contribution may be controlled by the Joint Force Air Component, deployed to its base at Akrotiri in Cyprus.
2221: The BBC's Alan Little in Tripoli says state media had been preparing the Libyan people for the attacks all day by showing footage of the 2003 Iraq invasion.
2217: An un-named French official tells the AFP news agency that the United Arab Emirates has pledged 24 aircraft to the coalition and Qatar between four and six.
2208: Al-Jazeera has said that Libyan authorities have detained a team of its journalists in western Libya, the AP news agency reports. The four correspondents are said to be British, Tunisian, Mauritanian and Norwegian.

North Korea, in that we are still at War there
Last I checked, there is only an Armistice
Anyone worried this could go on for longer than a few months? Bosnia?
I would have more confidence in this had it happened over two weeks ago!
Don’t miss this - we’re getting screwed six ways to Sunday.

Al-Qaeda commander calls for overthrow of Gaddafi and introduction of Sharia Law
Looks pretty quiet in Tripoli but then it must be the middle of the night....
Thanks for the thread. Watching now. They just said today is the 8th anniversary of the start of Op. Iraqi Freedom.
The reporters who cover my state legislature sometimes use Twitter, and do so credibly. It depends on the source, not the medium.
Been hearing occasional gunshots and a lot of car horns honking while a group of somebodies chanted something.
They we will give some shadowy revolutionary ruling council hundreds of millions of dollars to establish a new government and rebuild Libya. Wait for it.
"Death to America." Oh wait, that was the reporters chanting that.
Hey you:) Long time...good to see you.
So we’re in for some good times, eh? We’re arming and aiding islamists in Libya- actually fighting with/for them on the same side. What’s next, a president who signs off on that? ...ooops..
“I hasten to remind you all of the fog of war and of the Liberal medias propensity for reporting crap that is not even happening, or embelishing upon those things that MAY be happening. As long as there is a remote possibility of us having our men and women in harms way...I will make every effort not to listen to the press...but to defer to the commanders in the field-and GOD SPEED (and outstanding and accurate aim)to them all!”
Roger That! God Speed to all.. USN ret. sends..
Come now. We’re not in any two front war. There’s war in Afghanistan. Combat operations in Korea ended in 1953, in Iraq in 2010.
2307: The Libyan government has demanded an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, the AFP news agency reports.
2303: Sami in Tripoli tells BBC Radio 5 live that the attacks by Western powers show a level of arrogance: “The West have lost their minds. In the 1970s, Libya was supporting [people in other] countries who were freedom fighters. They called us terrorism supporters. Now the terrorism is in Libya, and they’re supporting [people who they] call them freedom fighters.”
2257: The US national security official adds: “It’s too soon to predict what [Col Gaddafi] and his ground forces may do in response to today’s strikes.”2253: A US national security official reports that Libya’s air defence systems have been “severely disabled”, according to Reuters
You just hit on the big issue. Are we protecting civilians, or providing air support for the rebels? Doing the latter is a declaration of war against the Libyan government.
They = Then
Combat soldiers are still on the ground in Iraq.
Who would be surprised if the two "leaders" are in cahoots?
