The level of radioactive iodine detected in seawater near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant was 1,250 times above the maximum level allowable, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Saturday, in a development that indicates contamination from the ruined reactors is spreading.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. meanwhile admitted it neglected to alert workers when it detected high radiation in a reactor building nine days ago.
The iodine-131 in the seawater was detected at 8:30 a.m. Friday, about 330 meters south of the plant's drain outlets. Previously, the highest amount recorded was about 100 times above the permitted level.

Wouldn’t some ion exchange resin just take to stuff our of the water?
A cation exchange resin would remove any radioactive metals and an anion exchange resin would remove the other half of any radioactive materials (stuff like iodine).
You just package it up in teabags or water pitcher filters for convenience.

You can expect these numbers to go up as neither TEPCO or the Japanese Government have a handle on this.
Plus, you can save a lot of money on expensive radiation treatments if you have cancer. :-)
This leak will be continuous until they entomb the entire complex in concrete.

If radiation is such a good thing, why do cancer patients fear it so much?
It isn’t going to leak for years. They’ll stop the leak and the iodine will dissipate atomically as well as physically.

1,250x is probably a safe level to be exposed to for brief periods. Most radiation exposure levels for humans are way, way below levels known to cause harm.

Alpha radiation is stopped by the skin,
Beta radiation is stopped by several inches of water,
Gamma radiation is stopped by lead and some other heavy metals.
If I double the distance I stand from a radiation source, the intensity of the irradiation is the cube root of the radiation at the previous distance.
Radiation is not magic but follows the same rules as any other form of energy.
