What Reid said was historically accurate. The words, "under God" were added later.

Here is the original pledge written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), who was a Baptist minister, a Christian socialist, and the cousin of socialist utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850–1898):

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. [bold emphasis added -CO] Conservatives are easily made to look ignorant ranting about such, while the left gets to assume the appearance of sanity and education they want. I'd drop it if I were you. We have bigger fish to fry.

I stand by what I said earlier - Harry was playing games. I also find it ironic that Harry Reid is citing the unity of the Republic when he himself is to blame for so much of the country's present divisiveness and downright criminality under his watch as a "public servant". Harry really does think he knows better and is better than the average American; therefore the pseudo intellectual games that appeal to a certain percentage of his leftist, liberal constituency. He appeals and plays to the self satisfied arrogance in his chosen demographic.

Always remember, Harry has a certain disdain for the great "unwashed":

"That was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's take at the official dedication for the center Tuesday morning, as he quipped that members will no longer have to "smell the tourists" on hot summer days. "My staff has always said, 'Don't say this,' but I'm going to say it again because it's so descriptive because it's true," Reid said. He referenced House Minority Leader John Boehner's comments about the long lines of tourists that stream into the Capitol complex, and said: "In the summertime, because (of) the high humidity and how hot it gets here, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol." As the crowd laughed, Reid said, "And that may be descriptive but it's true. Well, that is no longer going to be necessary."

I don't think that our money always had IN GOD WE TRUST.

It was during a time of great bloodshed that this was added (the American Civil War).

The under God was added either during or just after World War II, which was not a very blood letting for the United States, but there was about 100 million deaths worldwide from it, and Communism spread like wildfire after it.

Of course, then there is the case of PRAYER being done away with. This country has gone to hell since that time -- circa early 1960's. There was at least some morality left in the country at that time. Harder to find these days...

How many babies have been killed since abortion has been legalized? 40 million and counting?

More single parent Mom's than families having babies after the parents are FIRST married...

Silly me to think that God, Family, and Country are important...
