This is what the recession looks like in a country that’s decided to disinvest in public education. Reuters reports that Robert Bobb, the emergency financial manager appointed to address the Detroit’s bleeding public school system, has decided to send notices to all 5,466 unionized public school teachers. And 250 administrators will get layoff notices as well.

“One of Bobbs first acts was to stop mailing paychecks to post office boxes. He found something like 200 non existent employees.”

A few years ago, millions of children in the United States vanished overnight. It wasn’t even a blip on the news. Nobody launched an investigation. What happened was, the IRS required filers to provide their dependant’s Social Security numbers. I think the number was 30,000,000.

These layoffs are becoming common toward the end of school year.

I agree.

I've seen it happen when a school board is not sure if a budget will be voted in and they have to send out layoff notices rather than committing early to the next year's contracts.

Once the budget is voted in the contracts are mailed out.

Not really unusual, IMHO.

I think a social security number is automatically issued now but when I was born an SS number wasn’t required till I went to work.

Be careful what you wish for. Charters are not the answer. They are being used to advance the Progressive Agenda.

They should do that with the Detroit public school employees. See how many "employees" are no-show scams. Send people to actually do surprise visits to schools and verify that each "teacher" actually is really there in front of a classroom.

Bob Bobb? HA!

Truth is Detroit’s schools are flat-busted broke, and property is so worthless within city limits it would not run the system for two months if taxed at 90%.

After I lost my job and had to dump my house and move my family to another state, I sent Jenny Grandstand a letter. After calling her a complete failure, I did say that hiring Robert Bobb was the only thing she did right in 8 years. For some reason, I never got a response.

My personal favorite to run against Stabenow is Rob Steele. He was the tea partier who got a late start in a race against Dingell. Steele lost the race but gave the old fart and his minions a real workout. He was the first to announce a run against Stabenow this time.

Our former SOS Terri Land is also planning to run but I have no opinion of her. We also keep hearing rumors that former Governor John Engler will or won’t run.

In the past, they were all layed off at the end of the school year

That's exactly what's happened here.......I think the original writer is just trying to stir up the natives here in Detroit.

Thanks for the update..I hope you have a primary..it's better for the party..candidates have to prove their conservative bona fides..and it toughens them for the general election. What's Engler been doing these days? I sort of have an instant aversion to "retreads"..we need new blood.

Have you finished redistricting?..can you force out a Dem?Keep me appprised if you have the time.

Providence RI high school teachers were all FIRED but must work out their contract which ends this school year. Note they were fired, not layed off. If they have no new contract prior to this summer ,they will remain fired thus no unemployment funds. They are a Race To The Top State and the dollars are being generously dispensed to achieve the federal, top down, REFORM.

There are federal tests which 27 states (so far) will be using that will correlate with Common Core curriculum. These test results will demonstrate VAST improvement created by the TRANSFORMATION. It will be a false improvement of course.

Did you read the comments under the article?

Very entertaining.

They absolutely fail to recognize what the problem is -- the district is running a $327 million deficit -- or how it came about.

Detroit is what happens when the only employer is the government...and there are no taxpayers left.
