Lawsuit questioning Taco Bell's beef is dropped

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- An Alabama-based law firm said Monday it has withdrawn its class-action lawsuit that sought to force Taco Bell to stop calling the meat it serves "beef."

The lawsuit, filed in January in federal court in California, alleged that what Taco Bell calls "seasoned beef" is a meat mixture that has binders and extenders and does not meet federal requirements to be labeled beef.

The fast-food chain said Monday the allegations were "absolutely wrong" and the lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn by the firm. It said no money was exchanged and it is not changing any of its products or advertising.

"This sets the record straight about the high quality of our seasoned beef and the integrity of our advertising," Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed said in an interview. "We took great exception to the false claims made about our seasoned beef and wish the attorneys had contacted us before filing and publicizing a lawsuit that disparaged our brand."

I can’t stand Taco Bell. It’s garbage. Having said that though Taco Bell should counter-sue. If that law firm had simply said Taco Bell was horrible crap nobody would be able to argue.

Sounds like TB meets federal standards, but barely, and it isn’t proud of it.

It doesn’t matter. The lawsuit-MSM got what they wanted from this assault. Remember the point is not to win a lawsuit but to destroy in a PR war.

"Sounds like TB meets federal standards, but barely, and it isn’t proud of it. "

Looks like 88% qualifies.

"In response to the lawsuit, Taco Bell took out full-page ads in at least nine major newspapers, aired television spots and launched a YouTube campaign to proclaim its taco filling is 88 percent beef."

Taco Bell is inexpensive, palatable food. Cheap, decent food isn’t just taken for granted in America these days, it’s despised. TV is filled with cooking shows featuring gourmet fare and foodies routinely sneer at fast food, but many Americans simply can’t afford to shop at Whole Foods or worry about whether the cooking oil is “extra virgin”. There are hundreds of millions of hungry people all over the world who would love a chance to get their dinner at Taco Bell tonight.

If you eat a burger made from seasoned beef, even if you seasoned it at home, it isn’t 100% either.

I’m not defending Taco Bell, but almost nobody eats 100% beef in a taco or burger even when they think they are.

I worked at Taco Bell when I was in college and I can tell you it is absolutely beef.

I worked at another fast food restaurant and they absolutely used fillers. IIRC it was oatmeal and something else.

I thought it was dishonest and quit.

At Taco Bell they actually have spot checks with a machine that determines the quality of the meat coming from the kitchen. Corporate shows up unannounced and performs these tests, right in the middle of your lunch rush.

Care to describe what is not beef in the raw 85 or 90% hamburger bought from the local Safeway Store. Are they using pork fat or what?

Hey! If your product doesn’t meet the troika standards:

We don’t have to increase anybody’s taxes:

We’ll just sue the sh!t from the perceived ugly, evil, corporations that continue to rip off the middle class so that the wealthy owners will continue to pay with their collective asses!

I agree—I recently moved to right-near-a-Taco-Bell instead of right-near-McDonald’s, and so Taco Bell is my new weekly cheap and fast meal for my 4 kids for the one night we all get home late. . .

The 12 taco “party pack” is $10 and amazingly cheap—feeds all 4 of my kids, who eat it all and love it—lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, beef, corn shell. . .good fare. Somewhat healthier than McD’s and much, much cheaper than say Roundtable or Panda Express (both are $30 to feed all 4 kids). I really couldn’t make tacos cheaper myself. . .can’t believe they make much money from me (I don’t buy soda or extras, just the party pack.)

I also like the Sunday KFC deal of a bucket of chicken for $10 and a little more for some coleslaw/biscuits and a whole cake. . .

I could be wrong but I thought that figure had to do with fat percentage of the ground product. As in 85% or 90% percent ground trim mixed with 15% or 20% ground fat.

I have always presumed that to be beef fat when describing ground beef, pork fat when ground pork, etc.

Who were the clients of this Alabama-based law firm? It’s a little odd for a law firm to file a suit on its own behalf isn’t it?

"I can’t stand Taco Bell"

Ever since they were bought out by PepsiCo they went down hill.

I really don’t care what kind of crap they put in any fast food.

I only eat fresh ground beef from chuck roast I buy at Safeway that I have them grind for me on the spot. Any bones that are cut out I take home and simmer to make beef stock with.

The folks in the meat department there tell me they do exactly the same thing for their own hamburger: buy chuck on sale and have it ground.
