Have Republicans figured out Obama’s birth certificate is a political loser?

By Matthew Continetti

Continetti is guest-blogging for The Post.

I went on NPR’s “On Point” program this morning to talk about — what else — Donald Trump’s potential presidential candidacy. Before the interview I read Trump’s USA Today op-ed, “Obama, come clean.” The headline implies that Trump is continuing his quest to uncover President Obama’s actual birthplace and maybe recover the lost ark of the covenant while he’s at it. But what struck me was that Trump seems desperate to move beyond the “birther” issue:

There are many important and pressing issues that, should I elect to run, I will address — including China, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the price of fuel, unfair trade, unsustainable debt, the creation of jobs and the rising price of food.

Most Americans would prefer to have a serious conversation about these critical issues, followed by a competent and fearless leader who can advance them. Sadly, the press has en masse chosen to glom onto but one of the myriad issues I have discussed and would tackle as president.

Allow me to repeat here what I have said on numerous occasions: I have spoken my piece on this issue, and many people have the same doubts as I have. My concern lies with people like the single mom who recently wrote to me that she now works a third job to pay for the gas to get to the other two.

Maybe Trump has realized that the way to unseat Obama isn’t through his birth certificate but through criticism of his budget, tax, health care, monetary and energy policies. That’s what Michele Bachmann seems to have figured out:

Agree. Name is likely the main issue. Barrack Sr. vs. Barack 2. Even 2nd is odd — (1) different name (2) he’s supposed to be the son of Sr. Did Barrack use that designation anywhere? It’s tossed around now. Was there a Barrack Jr. back with wife #1?

It also raises a KEY QUESTION:

WHEN did Obama change his name from Barry or Steve Dunham to Barack Obama II and why?

I guess I missed the part where the Left is pleading with us to drop the issue.

That is what is being done in the article we're replying to.

The media is desperate to turn Trump into Charlie Sheen. I'd say they know he is doing damage to Obama.

And which state is going to do it? Jan Brewer just vetoed a bill requiring it in Arizona

Poor Jan got punked. She thought if she played nicey, nicey then 0bama would turn around and do her a favor. Yeah right. Like leave her out of the next day’s immigration talks, causing Jan to go running onto Greta’s show whining “I’ve been snubbed”. Jan showed that she’s about as smart as a box of rocks with that one.

It’s embarrassing when Sabato is the go-to pundit on ANY issue, least of all one as obvious as this. Just look at the set of Obama’s chin, and listen to the barely concealed contempt in his voice whenever he’s challenged. This is a man who does NOT like to be questioned! He likes his legitimacy questioned least of all. I guarantee, in his heart of hearts, Obama sees such issues as more racist than Constitutional. If only the American people were less prejudiced, we’d understand that the advantages of an Obama presidency outweigh all else, and we’d drop these silly BC questions in the interest of the Greater Good.

The reality is, the uber-superior air of a Malignant Narcissist covers the fact that way back in early childhood the MN’s value and very humanity were called into question. The parents failed to affirm the child, and did so to such a degree that they drove him to break with reality and create his own persona—one that has nothing to do with facts or the real world.

In that sense, it’s possible to feel sorry for Obama. The empathy ends when one realizes the destruction he’s already wreaked, and the wrecking ball he continues to wield. Best outcome: Trump et al continue to hammer away at the BC until finally not even Obama and the MSM can withstand the critical mass. Obama, the Dems and the MSM suffer a lethal blow, and we’re left trying to salvage what’s left of the USA. We’ll make it in the end—with or w’out the help of the ‘faithers’.

"But as I've been told FR is not monolithic so we can all have an opinion, right?"

It is a plus if you actually have actual facts that actually support your opinion. Got any?

It’s just amazing—amazing—how much we don’t know about this guy. I like seeing Trump take it to the MSM, and I probably shouldn’t try to armchair quarterback him. Still, I find myself wishing he’d modify his answer to their incessant question, ‘What have you found out in HI???’.

Rather than say, ‘It’s none of your business’, why not say, ‘Nothing you media people couldn’t have found out if you’d been doing your JOBS!’.

Just the look in Stephi’s eyes, if confronted head on like that, would be priceless. The MSM has failed us lock, stock and barrel. Rather than let them skate, make them look like incompetents. Or so it seems to me.

But again, Trump is doing a fine job, and since I couldn’t do better, I’ll leave the finer points to him.

“I just want the truth about Obama. Is that too much to ask?”

No it isn’t. Barry should have been pressured during the 2008 campaign to disclose his credentials and his school records. The MSM worked diligently to cover up and suppress anything that would have a negative impact on his chances to win. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

Who is going to force him to release his long form birth certificate?

Public opinion will.

Why do you think he wears a flag lapel pin everyday? Why he finally found a church in DC? Why he quit going to the black nationalist church? Why he gave up and accepted Bush tax cuts?

We could distribute it to members of Congress and they could then delete the parts they don't choose to endorse and/or make changes on their own 24/7.

I am all for keeping the birther issue alive and refreshed daily. I figure he was born in Hawaii but anything that can be used to cast doubts on that Marxist troll should be trumpeted from the highest mountain, frequently!

Just saw this article: Can the GOP solve its birther problem?

Of course, being from Salon, it starts with the assumption that this is a problem for the GOP -- which is the topic of this thread (and a conclusion with which I disagree).

But check out the analysis in the article: it is basically what Sabato, and we to some extent, have been saying: birtherism is symbolic of a much larger problem surrounding Mr. Obama's presidency.

That's why, as I have argued, focusing on the BC or the likelihood, or not, of removing Pres. Obama from office is very myopic. And, in fact, misses the major point.

While Salon believes birtherism feeds the feeling that Obama is not culturally American, doesn't understand American exceptionalism, etc., it is quite the other way around! Had Obama not been so completely, yes, FOREIGN in approach to the presidency -- for example, by pursuing ideas FOREIGN to the American idea, such as Socialism --- birtherism might not have hung around as long as it has.

But my bigger beef is we're handing Obama the election by wasting our time on this issue.

As I said, others have done quite a bit of investigation into Obama's eligibility including Professor Charles Rice, a professor at Notre Dame's Law School. It's not some sort of conspiracy. Questions to Obama's presidential eligibility is based on legal fact. The Constitution has specific requirements for Presidential eligibility. Charles Rice is a Professor at the Notre Dame Law School is quite specific in his commentary and treats this topic in a scholarly fashion.

As much as you may wish to dismiss it as a conspiracy, I would contend that America is a nation of laws and We the People must abide by the Constitution. Winning an election in 2012 for the sake of winning means nothing if America is no longer America.

It has been a LONG time since I have posted on here, but I still lurk. I was initially like many people out there when I first heard the name “Trump” and the words “running for president”. I laughed and my eyebrows went up like “the man is a loon”! (I’ve mainly saw him on TV for the most part and was never really that impressed). But once I started listening to him recently and his very strong, surprisingly in depth and intelligent views, and down to earth non-politico attitude, I am just extremely pleased that there is FINALLY someone out there considering a run in my lifetime that is not going to use the same old “cut and paste” politics that have been used, abused and accepted for too many decades.

I was a big Bush fan right after 9/11-that tragedy is what prompted me to sign up here on FR and very damn near signing up to be a Marine to kick the asses of those who did that to us. I called the local armory to ask if females, especially short ones, were accepted and was told if I could carry my own weight-I could join. Being a former Olympic trained gymnast, I said “hell yeah I can”. That is how much I loved this country.

Life got in my way and stopped me from being able to carry through with signing up, but in retrospect, I’m glad I saved my 4’11” female butt from leaving my children to go to that sand hole called the middle east and risk my life chasing a bunch of cockroaches around that region endlessly. I pray for our troops daily and want them back home. Back here, to protect US and OUR country.

Now hearing Trump talk about the reforms he wants to make, it is something that truly needs to be done to save our country from the wreck and embarrassment it has now fully become, at home and internationally. Now that time has passed since I first gave Trump the side-eye, I get more and more impressed, nodding and saying “damn right” to every point he brings up. From bringing our troops home to secure OUR borders, OPEC, bringing jobs back to the USA and put an end to this outsourcing crap, and last but definitely not least, the OUTRAGE I have that we as citizens of this country sit back and allow a total non-legal and sad excuse for a human being run our country into the ground with an Anti-Christ smile on his face while he’s out golfing and vacationing for the hundredth time while our country falls apart.

Screw being called a “racist”, it has nothing to do with his skin color-as my very own children are of mixed race, it has everything to do with the integrity of the position of the President of the United States that is currently being treated so callously. I believe Trump when he says he loves this country. I believe it with all my heart now that I have heard him stand his ground and be willing to do whatever it takes to make this country better and end the madness we’ve accepted.

Force Obama to prove his legality or FORCE HIM OUT! I want him out with a full-out arrest, along with all of those elites, and sorry excuses for people who have lied and covered up to help him get elected.

The MSM absolutely disgusts me, thus me giving up on watching/reading the crap they puke out and how they treat sane people like stupid assed children who need to be force-fed their lies or they’re too inept to even function. Trump doesn’t do that, and for that-he has my vote. He has given me faith that I am not alone any longer in mourning what has become of the USA and gives me back hope that it can return to the great country it once was, that our forefathers started-yet more formidable and even better than ever.

I just love how he shuts up every idiot who tries to interview him when he says a sentence with full out strength and deep seeded confidence that almost dares them to come back with a better response, which they never can do. They flounder and stutter and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy lol. So on that, GO TRUMP. Period.

There is hope in my mind now and personally can’t wait for 2012 to come as fast as it can. God knows I will be stuck like glue to every single debate he is involved in and cheering him on for getting to the core values that we cherish and pray for.

That is good analysis. It reminds me of a piece I read at American Thinker some time ago. The author said he’d been trying to figure out why it felt so awful to have Obama in the WH. He finally distilled it down into its essence: the man is a foreigner. He’s occupying the US like a conquering army. He doesn’t understand us or want to; he just wants to shape us in his image.

That’s it in a nutshell. Obama isn’t merely un-American-he’s anti-American. He doesn’t like us or what we stand for, and he’s determined to ‘fundamentally change’ us. We don’t like it? Tough; he won.

Unfortunately, while he’s at it he’s also destroying the economy. This goes beyond just changing us; this is decimating us. It’s just amazing it has come to this. The GOP hasn’t helped at all. So yes, I’m grateful for Trump. At least he’s taking the battle straight to Obama. May he succeed to an ever greater degree.

Apparently the mass zombification that infected the planet in 2008 (viral messianicus obotulus messianica) is beginning to wear off. Simple logic is now beginning to return.

The head zombie leader Chairman ObowMao is hiding something on his/her/its long form birth certificate and other personal records.

Why so scared O Great Zombie Emperor?

Obama’s numbers are going down since this came out. I think it helps Republicans.

Obama can’t “just show the birth certificate” because he’s hiding something.
Americans love to dig for facts and the MSM is lying (stupidly) about the topic.

It’ll get bigger and bigger as an issue until Obama’s hand is forced.

Of course, might be part of the plant to get Obama out of the way for Hillary.

"Pounding the ‘birth certificate issue’ gives average Americans a quick way to dislike Obama and that’s what they are seeking right now. “He’s not one of us and doesn't have our best interest at heart.”

I believe you've nailed it here. It isn't necessary to have the proof he is not a citizen since proving a negative is not possible. Only Obama can prove he IS a citizen and as long as he fails to do that there will be doubt shared by a lot of people. This doubt along with all of the other reasons will be just another excuse to withhold a vote for him.

Another aspect of this whole eligibility question that rarely if ever gets mentioned (certainly never mentioned outside of FR, not even by Trump) is this:

If it turns out that Obama is ineligible to be President, or if it turns out that there are extremely embarrassing disclosures on his college records (such as he claimed to be a foreign student — even if a false claim, still extremely embarrassing)... what will that say about the media? Not just the MSM but just about all of the media (with a few rare exceptions)?

When this story breaks — which I believe it will — and the full truth and all its details come to light, it will be an incredible indictment of the media and all the people who work for it, at all levels.

It will be the biggest story in the history of the United States.
