Its against DOD regulations to resell military MREs outside of the military. The companies can sell the components but only if they are not labeled or packaged the same as military MREs.

So anything you are buying on Ebay is stolen.

Now tell me how those 20 year old ebay MREs you’re buying are stored. Were they kept at 70 degrees for those 20 years or at 110 degrees?

The cases are stamped “US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY COMMERCIAL RESALE IS UNLAWFUL”

Except, there isn’t any law against selling them, this has been looked into.
That’s right - despite the verbiage, it’s not against the law to sell them.
You can be sure that eBay is not in the business of breaking any laws.

Retort packaging is basically canned food, but without the can. Provided the packaging is not damaged or bulging, the food is safe to eat for many years, just like canned foods are.

“That’s right - despite the verbiage, it’s not against the law to sell them.”

Military MREs only come from ....wait for it.....wait for it......THE MILITARY

The companies making them don’t sell them to non-military because they’ll jeopardize the government contract which prohibits them from selling MILITARY products outside of MILITARY channels.

So the ones you buy on ebay are being sold outside military channels. Whoever is selling them either stole them or is violating orders to sell them.

But enough of the technicalities, how were those 20 yr old ebay MREs stored?

MREs and other shelf stabilized food lose nutrients the longer they are stored.

Freeze dried chow is a ticket to constipationville. I’ve switched to canned food. I think it’s more nutritious and better tasting. A can of pineapple chunks in juice is much better than gnawing like a mouse on freeze-dried apples.

You can add water to freeze dried food. Actually, that's the intention.

Everything loses nutrients the longer it is stored, that’s not news.

“Enough of the technicalities.”

You brought it up, not me. LOL!! I can’t help it if you’re mistaken. Thanks for playing.

There used to be a great thread on FR about these subjects. It was called “(+) THE ART OF THE CACHE (+)” but it has gone down memory lane. Great thread with many helpful comments from food to how to store your weapons in the woods to keep from losing them when SHTF.

Some dude, about 50ish, was sentenced to a year in jail. Because the state had notified him they were going to CUT HIS WELFARE BENEFITS!!

And now he has 'three hots and a cot' for a year!

If you have no shame, and no gumption, he just hit the jackpot for sending an e-mail or two. (What??? Welfare benefits and sending eMail???)

We refer to this site all the time: http://stilltasty.com/

Personally, we don't keep much of anything in the cupboard longer than one year except some canned food.

StillTasty has a good article called Sturdy Staples: 9 Foods That Can Outlast You. So it is not true that you have to pay an arm and a leg for all your emergency supplies!

For really long-term food storage, freeze dried is the way to go, imho.
