Tea party favorite Sharron Angle says she is running as a Republican in Nevada's first-of-its-kind special election to replace U.S. Rep. Dean Heller.

Angle told supporters Friday she needs to raise $150,000 immediately to win the seat.

Heller is heading to the Senate . . .

I do believe that was voter fraud. Not to say anything about Angle.

This woman was a disaster ! Any other candidate in 2010 would have given a tough fight ! Having said that, people did under estimate the ground game of Reid !

I’m a native Nevadan, but do not currently live there. But I heard that she was also a “P.R. disaster” from a close friend (oddly she used the same word “disaster” to describe Angle). Nevada is a wacky state for politics, because there are so many forces to deal with, it’s hard to know just what the people will do. That having been said, it’s time that people woke up and started making their conservative voices heard, rather than laying down and hoping it’ll all just go away.

The fact that the national GOP didn’t give her enough money or that Harry Reid was engaged in voter fraud had something to do with it. She was the Tea Party candidate and a strong conservative. Anything wrong with that?

Angle had one thing in her background that will be the kiss of death in many statewide or congressional races across the nation. Her "abolish Social Security".

I think conservatives and Republicans are foolish to put up any candidate with that statement in their background, unless they like seeing Dims reelected, and especially like seeing Dims like Harry Reid reelected at probably the weakest point in their career. I understand Harry Reid made great use of it.

Angle: Abolish SS

And "abolish the minimum wage" is about as bad. Rasce (sp?) led the WV senate race until the week he came out with that statement. He fell behind and never led again.

Some might love to say and hear things like that, but if you like to defeat Dims in elections... better just propose reasonable reform ideas after winning elections.

You said it. She’s selling crazy and Nevada’s not buying on account of the fact they are already stocked up.

I’m with you, the place for her to run is in the HOUSE. I don’t buy into the Karl Rove / MSM crap about her being unqualified (heck, look at the president). Then, 4 years from now after she builds up a record, she can, maybe, take a second run at Reid.

That is not a fact in any way, shape, matter, or form. She got a significant amount of support from the national groups - including the NRSC and Rove’s groups, among others who were on the air fighting the battle. Not to mention she raised an enormous amount of her own cash for the race. She was a conservative but very gaffe prone - personality played a big role in her loss.

Too many people on this board don’t have a clue. This is an overwhelmingly republican district. If the special election involves one republican and one democrat, she wins easily (as any republican would). The only issue is whether this election will allow multiple candidates to enter: a scenario in which too may republicans may allow a dem to win. She has expressed her interest early. Other republicans should take heed.

Besides we need more Reagan conservatives in congress.

Angle’s positions on social security and the minimum wage are those of Ronald Reagan and Milton Friedman. Why are these positions indefenseable?

Has the secretary of state made a ruling on that? My own reading of the law was that for partisan offices, the state party committees make nominations for the vacancies, then the special election is among those candidates.

However the Dems were lobbying that the secretary of state decide that the law meant any number of candidates could enter the special election.

Friedman was never elected to anything. And show us where Reagan campaigned on the abolishment of SS.

And, do you recommend that all Republican candidates for federal office make abolishing SS part of their platform?

I supported Angle all the way, but I’ve come to realize that while she is a genuine conservative, and a person of fine character, she’s dumb as a box of rocks, and a terrible politician.

She raised 98% of her money from individual contributions. Just 1% came from PAC contribiutions. Although she actually outraised Reid in total numbers in 2010, she needed more to unseat an incumbent plus she had to win a contested primary. Reid had an existing campaign treasure chest in addition to the amount raised in 2010. He spent more than a million more than he took in. The SEIU also gave him plenty of free manpower. Reid got 21% of his money from PACs--and more than 15 times what Angle received.

Total Raised and Spent 2010 Race: Nevada Senate

Take a look at the funding provided by the Dem national committee--over $2 million.

Outside Spending

Why do you keep using the word “abolish”? Angle wanted to “Replace” social security with a more equitable system whereby the people would be able to control and secure their contributions like a 401k account and shield the money from the voracious appetite of government.

Why do you keep using the word “abolish”?

Because that's the term Angle had used in the past, prior to her senate run. You need to follow the link in #7. She tried to soften her "abolish" statements when it became a campaign issue, but Harry Reid didn't soften it in his use of her past statements.

I don't know if she's as dumb as a box of rocks, but she's obviously not a very good nominee considering she managed to lose to Harry Reid who was one of the absolute most vulnerable Senators in 2010. Angle seems to be a case of a candidate who's right on most of the issues and just generally awful at advocating and defending her views in the court of public opinion.

You'll get a lot of people who think she lost because of Rove or fraud or some other conspiracy - but the truth is she was the bad nominee most political strategists on both the right and left knew she would be from the outset. Had we had a better candidate we would have won that Senate seat - perhaps by a large margin.
