A man's world

The sexual economics of college campuses empower men at the expense of women.

Ten years of surveys with long names—the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the National Survey of Family Growth, the College Women's Survey, and the College Social Life Survey—show that sex among young Americans is rampant, but it's not making many of them happy.

Two sociologists, Mark Regnerus (University of Texas) and Jeremy Uecker (University of North Carolina), crunched the numbers for their 2011 book Premarital Sex in America (Oxford University Press). They found that three-fourths of 18- to 23-year-old women are in dating relationships of some kind—and 94 percent of those are sexually involved.

Love and marriage no longer go together like a horse and carriage, but promiscuity and depression often do, especially among women. Women who have had multiple sex partners have poorer emotional health than women who report having had zero or one, and "women who report the greatest number of partners display the clearest symptoms of depression."

While it's simplistic to say more partners, more pain, a 2005 study found that "sexual behavior patterns came before depression, not after them. Girls with multiple sex partners were about 11 times more likely than virgins to report elevated depression symptoms." A majority of women who engaged in "hooking up"—casual sex—said they felt "disrespected" afterward. (One-fourth of men said they felt that way.)

Regnerus and Uecker found that men are typically in control of when dating begins, but women are in control of when sex begins—and it often begins earlier than they want. That's because "women are increasingly competing with each other for the affections of increasingly rare high-quality men who are willing to commit. When women compete for men, men win: the price of sex goes down."

...but women are in control of when sex begins—and it often begins earlier than they want...

Then they must not be in control. Which is it?

My nephew, currently in college, was recently telling me about the college dating and sex scene. There is no dating, just sex. Girls don’t even ask for a cheap burger and fries. They just come over to your house and “hook-up.” You don’t even have to call them afterwords or be exclusive.

Ladies, and I use that term loosely, if you want respect don’t give it up so easily.

A tightly held faith in God makes a difference. The authors found that those most likely not to be having sex are "more religious, especially in terms of how central it is to their identity."

Core values make a difference ... who'da thunk?

God ordained sex to be enjoyed between a married man and woman. We go outside of what God ordained and are shocked at the results. But the left is happy - this is what they want.

Add to the depression of women (and I would wager some men as well) because of “empty sex” and the sometimes resulting abortions and depression that follows, and women really lose.

And when major universities push “easy sex”, such as Yale and Princeton, they are also responsible for the results.

I disagree, we all lost. Men do pay a terrible price for sexual immorality, we just care less at the time. I have 3 boys, I want them to marry young ladies that did not succumb to our decadent culture. Really, America has lost...

Not to ask a personal question but does your nephew see women who are not promiscuous as “different and odd” or does he view them respectively? I guess what I’m asking is do you think that virtue in a woman is still valued by men or has that gone out of style?

Good question!

He has good wholesome lady friends and finds the easy open sex to be just as strange as I do however he’s also a 21 year old guy who isn’t going to turn it down either. One of his best friends that he spends a lot of time with is a non-promiscuous young lady.

Women who have had multiple sex partners have poorer emotional health than women who report having had zero or one, and "women who report the greatest number of partners display the clearest symptoms of depression."

Now let's not commit the fallacy of "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc," shall we? It might be that promiscuity does not cause or even only aggrevate depression; rather, promiscuity and depression could have a common root cause. Further, the study didn't even establish that the "symptoms" of depression ensued AFTER the promiscuity - it could be that those gals had ALWAYS been depressed (and perhaps even sought sex to alleviate their negative feelings).

On a different note: Why doesn't the article talk more about the men's feelings? I bet that the sexually active ones felt great (only 1/4 felt "disrespected" after casual sex - does it perhaps follow that the other 3/4 felt marvelous?), whereas the 25-year-old virgin guys were likely down in the dumps.

Regards,

The statement is not contradictory.

The woman has control over the commencement of sexual activity in the relationship. However, the woman is finding herself incresingly pressured by outside influences to start aving sex, so she decides to begin before she actually would prefer to. Because she is unwilling to pay the potential price for holding out, she consents.

The article states promiscuous girls are more depressed, as if this is something new. Not so.

Otherwise the article rings true. When I was a young student at a medical center where there was a 3 to 1 female to male ratio, a guy could punch way out of his weight class. Girls who normally would not give a average guy the time of day were suddenly flirting and etc. It was depressing ../sarc!

When I was a teen, my Mom said this... “men sow their oats with some women but they marry the other kind of woman”. I am not sure if this still applies. I am wondering if young men still have a higher standard with respect to the woman they fall in love with and want to marry (not just spend 20 minutes with). If not, I would predict divorces to even rise more.

James Brown - It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World Video and Lyrics

This is a man’s world, this is a man’s world
But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

You see, man made the cars to take us over the road
Man made the trains to carry heavy loads
Man made electric light to take us out of the dark
Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark

This is a man’s, a man’s, a man’s world
But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl
It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World Lyrics Glee on http://lyricsmusicvideo.blogspot.com/2010/06/glee-its-mans-mans-mans-world-lyrics.html

Man thinks about a little baby girls and a baby boys
Man makes them happy ‘cause man makes them toys
And after man has made everything, everything he can
Do you know that man makes money to buy from other man?

This is a man’s world
But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

He’s lost in the wilderness
He’s lost in bitterness
He’s lost, lost somewhere in this, in loneliness
