The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that it plans to ban the sale of “the most toxic rat and mouse poisons, as well as most loose bait and pellet products” to residential customers. The goal is to better protect children, pets and wildlife. “These changes are essential to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures of children that occur every year from rat and mouse control products and also to protect household pets,” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. The EPA also will require that all rat and mouse poisons

Sybeck1 ~ So Willard wins in 2011, not 2012?

Glenn ~ I hope I'm not the only person to get that reference.

You're not. I was trying to work in a reference to Ben [Bernanke]...

But stray cat rescuers will rejoice because more families will want to adopt them as pets.

“the most toxic rat and mouse poisons, as well as most loose bait and pellet products” to residential customers. ***

I assume they are refering to D-Con and other anti-coagulant baits.

They have been used around here for over 60 years with no problems except the EPA.

I have an old recipe book with various rat poisons that would curl your hair! It is amazing what you could buy over the counter 120 years go!

Eventually they will get around to banning insecticides. Every ban is a loss of a little bit more of our liberty.

They already banned Diazinon for residential use. I stocked up.

The first time our cat tried to present such a “gift” to my wife, she nearly jumped out of her shoes. ;-) I might try one of the electric ones this fall (that’s the only time of year we ever see the little critters).

I saw this article a few minutes ago. I sent the article to the pest control service I use.

1 minute later, I get a reply from them.....here it is!

Dear DCBryan1@xxxxx.com:

In regards to the recent EPA decision, we will still be able to sell all of these products listed in the article to the public, but not in small quantities. They have to be sold in 16lb quantities at least, that is what is changing. We still have some old labeled product left and you can buy them in 4lb pails, but once we run out they will be in 16lb quantities only.

Here is a QA on our website that explains it:

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

The EPA is all stick and no carrot. Motion activated infrared digital cameras and microprocessors are cheap enough we could have robocats do a retinal scan before termination. These devices would be useful against bigger rats in the future.

Reminds me of a story I heard about a UN sponsored technology development program in India.

The purpose of the program was to promote indigenous technology by having entrepeneurs compete to design and produce mouse traps for the local market. The initial rounds of the contest were judged by local engineers and the final round was to be judged by the UN official in charge of the project.

Well, there was great excitement and hundreds of entries. At last, the winning entry was selected for presentation to the UN official.

The designer came up with something that looked like a small pet carrier with an opening on one side with a ramp visible inside the box. It plugged into the wall and had blinking lights on the top and emitted a faint whirring sound.

The designer explained how it worked: “You see, when the proximity sensor detects a rat, a soft red light comes on inside the box and a digital recording of a female rat in heat starts to play through these mini-speakers on either side. Naturally the rat is curious, so he goes inside and up the ramp. When he gets to the top of the ramp, he breaks this electric eye, and this spinning steel blade is released and it swings down and decapitates the mouse, neatly and humanely. Then the blinking light on top switches from green to red, so you know to clean out the trap and reset it.”

The UN official rejected the proposal and explained to the designer that he should not be taking such a high tech approach, and should prepare a design that uses traditional Indian technology and materials.

Well the designer went away and came back in two weeks with a new proposal. This one was made of ratty old wood and had the words “MOUSE TRAP” over the door in ill-matched brass letters. Inside, once again, you could see a ramp.

The designer explained his new proposal: “This ramp is made out of old outhouses, uses no electricity, and best of all, requires no cheese. You set this trap down where you think there may be a mouse walking by. When he sees the trap, he reads the sign, and is naturally thinks there might be chees inside, so he goes inside and up the ramp. At the top of the ramp, I screwed this rusty old hacksaw blade across the opening. When the mouse gets to the top of the ramp, he puts his head over the hacksaw blade and swings it back and forth, saying “Where’s the F-ing Cheese!””

Needless to say, he won the competition.

The goal is to better protect children, pets and wildlife.

You should see all the dead kids, pets and critters around my neighborhood, can't throw a dead cat without, well, hitting a dead cat. /s

Well thanks, EPA. All this time, I'd been doing that by just not giving my kids rat poison. Since you haven't banned it, and must therefore assume it to be healthy, how much Dran-o should I add to his apple juice if my kid's all plugged?

Actually, as far as they're concerned, you're the main target.

Definite tagline potential!

Some products encapsulate the bait so that rats and mice can get at it, but people and larger pets cannot easily do so.

Still, this should not be a concern of the EPA. Congress should re-delegate this to consumer product safety, at minimum. Environmental concerns should be limited to things that propagate through the outdoors, period.

You are correct. Each day as the Government tightens its noose around the people’s necks that I am as old as I am. It will not be very many more years before people of a certain age are told to visit their local Governmental Office to be informed when they will leave this world.
