Chris Matthews' New Thrill? Hardball Hosts Flips and Praises 'Serious,' 'Informed' Bachmann
NewsBuusters ^ | 14 Jun 2011 | Scott Whitlock

What is Chris Matthews up to? The MSNBC anchor, who once trashed Michele Bachmann as a "zombie" and a "nutcase," on Tuesday praised the Congresswoman as "poised, informed and serious." Touting Bachmann's performance in Monday's Republican presidential debate, he gushed that the Representative did "great."

The Hardball host, who once battled with Bachmann and wondered if she was "hypnotized," hyped that the debate saw "the emergence of a star." He added, "[Bachmann] was, of course, created here. She came off as...poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?"

In an amusing moment, Matthews prefaced a question to Jennifer Donahue of the Huffington Post by proclaiming, "I'm not an active Republican." Regular viewers of MSNBC probably already know that.

A partial transcript of the June 16 segment can be found below:

5pm

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Maybe the biggest story from last night was not Romney's cool or Pawlenty's retreat, but the emergence of a star, Michele Bachmann. She was, of course, created here. She came off as poised, informed, that's right, Gene, poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?

5:19

MATTHEWS: Well, there's a woman, person, a friend not afraid of the mainstream media.

MICHAEL STEELE: That's right. She's not.

MATTHEWS: No hiding over in Fox land. First of all, what did you think of her performance last night? Because we all thought she was great.

Gov Palin is a systems thinker. I believe if she thought a presidential candidate should have executive experience it is reasonable that she would have the same expectation of her VP (in case the unspeakable happened).

Agree. This is more about Sarah than Bachman.

All they have to do is look here on FR. He is trying to create strife and infighting within the GOP.

Ignore him. He needs to spend some time worrying about his girl Obama.

Sounds like Crissy Mathews has a tingle again.

Looks like the Rats want a Mitt/Bachmann ticket.

If BHO should happen to lose. Just a new resident in the White house. There socialist agenda should not suffer

Its a way to split up both the Bachmann and Palin supporters into two groups, that way they both cancel out and Romney ends up with the nomination. The media hopes to play Michele like a fiddle, get her to trash Palin a little bit, that way us Palin supporters will hate Michele and refuse to vote for her, then its a clear path for Romney..its so easy to read the media..everything they do is to benefit their precious Obama

If Michele weren't taking her cues from a backstabbing weasel, I maybe could be as magnanimous as you...

Notice the Bachmann (faux)supporters have basically disappeared since the Matthews smooch.

That’s exactly what Matthews wants for you to do. He wants you to back way from her - it is called reverse psychology and I am amazed at how many people here he sucked in.

Sarah is biding her time. When she gives us the signal, we'll know what to do.

I agree. It's like the scene in Braveheart where the British are charging on horses towards Wallace's men during the Battle of Stirling. Wallace keeps telling his men to hold lifting the sticks until exactly the right moment. The tension was unbearable.

Sarah is a genius at politics and will pick the best time to enter. She will have an army of Patriots behind her.
