Wallace Demonstrates Flaky Journalism
America Talks ^ | 6/26/11 | David Zublick

Posted on 06/26/2011 11:42:41 AM PDT by AmericaTalks

On his program Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked his guest, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann if she was a flake.

Bachmann seemed perturbed by the question, and rightly so, and then proceeded to answer the question with coherence, grace and dignity. She responded by saying "well, I think that would be insulting, to say something like that, because I'm a serious person". Bachmann pointed out that she has been married 33 years, is a lawyer, has a post-doctorate degree in federal tax law, worked in the U.S. federal tax court, has five children, raised 23 foster children and opened a charter school for at-risk youth.

"I've also been a state senator and a member of the United States Congress for five years. I've been very active in our business. As a job creator, I understand job creation. But also I've been leading actively the movement in Washington, D.C., with those who are affiliated with fiscal reform," Bachmann said.

Wallace's question was an ugly example of shoddy journalism, the kind of "gotcha" question reserved for Republicans, and especially Republican women, in what can only be described as a double standard set by the mainstream media that gives liberals a pass.

Wallace asked the question because in some circles Bachmann is perceived as gaffe prone. To be fair, she has made a few mistakes, but has come a long way since the "anti-American" comment in November of 2008.

But where was the media when Barack Obama, while campaigning for president in 2008, said he had visited "57" states, referred to a "bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor", declared that Memorial Day honors "an unbroken line of fallen heroes - and I see many of them in the audience here today"?

Yes, political candidates do make embarrassing remarks on the campaign trail, but once elected, every speech, every move will be without flaw, because should something go awry, the media will be all over it, such as when Obama picked the name of a dead hero as a live Medal of Honor winner, referring to a military medic as a "corpseman", and botching a toast to Queen Elizabeth II, right?

Maybe not.

Wallace did offer one of those back-handed apologies on the Fox News website, the kind where one says "if anyone was offended, I'm sorry".

That's not good enough. This was a hit job on Bachmann, one for which she should be insulted. But journalists should also be insulted, as should every American. There is no place in the news media for this kind of attack.

And although we have come to expect this sort of thing from the talk hosts at MSNBC, or the writers at the Huffington Post, one would expect better from a Sunday morning news and analysis program, especially one on Fox.

Shame on you, Chris Wallace. That question was flaky journalism.

It's considered post-doctural work by lawyers with a JD.
Of course, because IT IS. That is to those who actually have done the work. The pedant class, like the media class, cannot get that simple fact.

“Most attornies would agree with MB’s phraseology.” Are you an attorney?

Would they? I don’t know frankly. Wiki doesn’t and while that is not an authoritative source, its “crowd sourcing” nature would imply that most attorneys would not.

Again, I don’t think she needs to pad her resume. She should simply refer to it as a “post-graduate” degree and let it go at that.

What does it matter? The issue is simple - you are a self confessed pedant. So be it. MB was accurate, you dislike that fact. (And yes, a Juris Doctorate IS a Doctorate, and an LLM is a POST doctoral degree in the legal community.) What I do for a living, or not, is not the issue here.

I couldnt beleive he asked her that. She kicked his ass with her well spoken reply. Do you think he would have ever asked Shrillary Klinton that? Or Hussein?

I will be sending him an email.

“What does it matter?”

Well it matters because you are telling us what is true and what is not true.

So you’re not a lawyer. That’s fine. I despise lawyers.

I’ve never heard any lawyer refer to themselves as having a “doctorate”. In every single case, they say “I have a law degree.” A JD is a professional degree and not a doctorate as most (the few being you and another poster so far) would think of it.

My point, again, is that she leaves her open to the charge of resume padding. Why? Just refer to it at a “post-graduate” degree.

So you’re not a lawyer.
Really? Where did I say that?
I’ve never heard any lawyer refer to themselves as having a “doctorate”.
So, you don't get out much. Many times I have heard that.
My point, again, is that she leaves her open to the charge of resume padding.
No. Not even a little. She would be guilty of that if she claimed that she had a degree that she did NOT have. To call the degree she got AFTER she got her Doctor of Laws a "post doctoral degree" is simply factual.

No, but I do have a PhD, and I have done post-doctoral work.

what type of law degree does Obama and his wife have??

I believe they both lost their license...is that a fact?
are they still entitled to be referred to as Lawyers?

so just maybe Michele Brachmann’s resume looks a little stronger than the Obama’s..

“is simply factual”

I’m the pendant here and I say that a degree gotten after even a real doctorate isn’t a “post-doctoral” degree. That is unless it is one of those super PhD’s awarded in Russia but that is overly pedantic even for me.

J.D. - Juris Doctorate

LLM - "post"-doctorate degree for Bachman

How dare she call her J.D. a "doctorate" degree!

Are you trying to make yourself look like a flake, FRiend, or are you just confused? You can quibble with the definition of what a J.D. is, but the degree has "doctorate" in one of the two words that comprise its title.

Your post reminds me of those who try and dissect what Sarah Palin says, only to find out that Palin was technically right, and people like you are wrong.
