Poll: 52 Percent of Americans Clueless About Importance Of July 4th
WPIX ^ | 7/3/11

NEW YORK (PIX11)— Now, here's something for the American History books!

A Marist Poll just out found 52 percent of our fellow Americans either had no clue about the significance of July 4 -- or thought Independence Day was on another date, altogether. Also, one in four drew a blank on the question about who we fought to win our independence!

The fact only 58 percent of respondents knew with certainty that we declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776, feeds into what many have been saying for a while: that the shocking lack of basic knowledge about the United States and its origins symbolizes the failure of the education system.

Meanwhile, just 31 percent of adults 30 and under replied that 1776 is the year the United States broke away from Great Britain. But, 75 percent of Americans, 45 to 59, were most likely to know the right answer.

Marist surveyed more than a 1,000 people for the poll.

If this isn't evidence of the need to dismantle the Federal Dept of Education, I don't know what is.

Would it even be missed?

Figures don't add up the way this is written. If "only 58 percent of respondents knew with certainty that we declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776" (i.e. know the date and the country with certainty), then how could "52 percent of our fellow Americans either had no clue about the significance of July 4 -- or thought Independence Day was on another date" (over 50% had no clue about July 4th, or thought it was another date). This can't be if over 50% new both the date and the country. Someone explain to me if I'm wrong here.

You are so correct about the education system in our country. My twelve-year-old granddaughter was visiting with two of her friends. They mentioned Obama being the first black president. I told them he is actually half white/half black. They were shocked! It is sad to think what the schools are not teaching. It's all about environmental responsibility, etc., and nothing about history, or the way our government functions (or doesn't function). . .

I would say you can tell a genuine American by his understanding of the significance of July 4. So it would tautological that 100% of Americans understand it.

It sometimes seems that those of us that descended from the Old South... those whose ancestors fought and were defeated by the Union... have come to love that Union more than those that did not suffer the crushing defeat of the Blue Army. Now I know plenty of Americans... North, South, East and West love America but... I can promise you this... Mississippi is full of Red, White and Blue Patriots today... and we love this country and will fight and die for her if needed (many of our sons and daughters are fighting and dying for us today). We mean it when we say GOD BLESS AMERICA. I figure marist... a putrid bunch of leftists... know this and avoided polling where America is loved best.

It might have helped some if the founders had chosen the right date. (July 2 would have been more fitting since most of them actually signed it on that date.) But probably not.

One of the sad things in education is that our children are not taught the meaning of the “United States of America”.

On July 5, 1776, the continent awoke to the fact that there were 13 soverign states, each fully independent from the King of England and from each other. The citizens of each state could pick their Governor and run their own lives as they saw fit, not subject to any other authority.

After the Continental Congress failed, the effort was that each soverign state yield a little of its authority to create an unbrella federal government to coordinate the mutual interests of the “United” states with a Constitution.

Limited government, free people and the concept was expressed in the Ninth and Tenth Amendments...only to be eroded in the Progressive Era and Roosevelt socialism.

“52% of americans...”

Were these “52%” US citizens/residents or Americans (Canadians,US, Mexican etc.). I wonder if they were asked about their legal status.

I doubt our pResident knows it’s significance if no one writes it down on his teleprompter.

Unless I am mistaken the South -generally reflected the British system more than they reflected the Northern Colonies.
And I seem to recall how the Constitution of the Confederacy was a reflection of the US Constitution-More than it was any lesser creed. Some get very offended when I remind them that when America speaks of the South as if they were alien they forget that War of Northern Aggression was the only war we’ve fought where both sides fielded Americans-and both lost American Sons. Reconstruction was an evil intent to punish the South and to keep her poor and enslaved to the Yankee And I would be the call remembering the Questionable 14th Amendment as a way the 0 can ignore Congress if they refuse to raise the debt limit— was an invention by a Yankee attorney.

I was curious a while ago ..just before my daughter graduated to see what her knowledge of American history was...she didn’t know when the Revolutions was fought...or the civil war, WWI and WWII. Didn’t know the significance of Pearl harbor...who was President during WWII. I was shocked at her utter lack of concern for NOT knowing this...her who cares attitude.

Just a little while ago a bunch of the teachers from the school came to where I work for some food and we struck up a conversation about her and I told them it was a shame that they would graduate someone who had little or no knowledge of our historical roots...they just stood there listening to me....I was on a roll and I let everything out that had been bothering me. I was really upset and one teacher who supposedly taught her Spanish..(but in reality just yacked on the phone during class..(we pulled our daughter out of her class..she was a useless teacher) she asked me if my daughter had learned any Spanish very sarcastic (guess she was PO’d that we turned her into the administration for being a bad teacher) I looked her square in the eyes and said “No..she did not learn any Spanish”. What a bunch of tools they all were...But the fact remains that my kid did not learn American history in that school...absolutely shameful.

Yes, and those Marxist voters included the children of Richard M. Nixon and William F. Buckley, Jr.! The American experience is not held in high esteem any more. Where is Cal Coolidge, who was born on July 4?

Most parents don’t mind if the children are not taught “just facts.” They just want inflated grades. Same with administrators

the Questionable 14th Amendment

That amendment has been the source of lots of problems. And it was never even constitutionally ratified.

Some of the strongest backers of the Department of Education are conservatives who think government has to “support” education. I don’t think we are getting out the message of truth to so many of our misguided countrymen.
