Tom Condliff, a 22-stone former policeman trying to persuade a health authority to fund obesity surgery, has started the latest round of his legal battle
The grandfather from Talke, Staffordshire - who is 62 and 6ft 2in - says he needs stomach surgery to save his life.
But the North Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) refuses to fund a laparoscopic gastric bypass operation.
In April, the High Court refused to quash the PCT's decision not to provide the surgery.
Mr Condliff's lawyers are seeking to overturn the High Court ruling in the Court of Appeal.
(snip)
Mr Clayton told Lord Justice Maurice Kay, Lady Justice Hallett and Lord Justice Toulson that his client is "morbidly obese" and suffers from diabetes and a number of associated illnesses.
Mr Condliff's health is deteriorating and doctors fear he could have less than a year to live, added Mr Clayton.

The only way out is to get rid of centrally controlled health care and put it back into the hands of individuals.
It sounds like the NHS has determined that letting the man die is far cheaper than this surgery and then years of being in the NHS.
You are right, and even then, you sometimes have to fight with insurance companies to get some things that you need. I will not get into the details, but Blue Cross is a company that I am very happy with at present. They would rather spend a dollar on band aids than ten cents on a fix.
oops, that is very UNHAPPY with.
Killing off a 62-year-old 22 stone man within a year is not a bug as far as the NHS is concerned. It’s a feature.
It’s $10,000. Just spend the damn money and get it done, aleady.

Are Brits allowed to purchase care/procedures with private funds? I remember hearing about Canadians obtaining black market imaging diagnostics due to restrictions up there.
Didn’t he see the Twilight Zone? He’s “obsolete”.
308 LBS AT 6’2” is heavy but not to the point of needing surgery. I’m 6’4” and after leaving the Navy I gained a lot. I got up to 302 lbs before going on a diet and getting back to 230 lbs. What he needs to do is stop eating so much.
Or....
Just put the fork down and push away from the table.
Quit leading a sedentary lifestyle.
Stop being face down in the snacks.
Duh
Insurance companies are just more bureaucracy...they really aren't any better than government-funded health care...the only advantage is if they cheat, you can take them to court...a prospect that will be far more difficult in a government-controlled scheme.
What I am talking about is getting rid of all of the centralized controls and having it between the doctors and the patients. Including the negotiation for fees. Sure, encourage the use of medical savings accounts to allow patients to accumulate savings for medical expenses. But get rid of the government-controlled, government-regulated, and largely government-funded oligarchy and allow authentic free market laws to operate.
(And, btw, if he really doesn't have the money...well, that's what charity is for)
Change it to ‘’Marxist’’ obese man and he’ll sail thru.
The unsaid bottom line is that he is 62 years old, and they would prefer that he die instead of costing them money.
Of course.
You dont HAVE to use the NHS.
Thanks, I didn’t know that. The answer was not so obvious to me. As I indicated, there was a band of marauding imaging techs performing scans out of trailers in strip mall parking lots in Canada. As I understood it, Canada did/does not have a private option for such services.
