Remember that New York Yankees fan who caught Derek Jeters 3,000th career hit which happened to be a home run and received some goodies in exchange for the ball?
There might be a catch to that catch.
Christian Lopez didnt auction the ball off. He simply returned it to Jeter. In appreciation, Lopez received three bats, three balls and a jersey, all autographed by Jeter. Lopez also received four box seats at Yankee Stadiums presidents box for the rest of the season .
Lopez, who owes $150,000 in student loans, also may owe $14,000 to the IRS for the gifts the Yankees provided.
Im just waiting for the IRS phone call, Lopez, 23, told ABCNews.com on Tuesday. Im not going to let something like the IRS stand in my way from enjoying myself. For right now, Im going to enjoy everything I can. I dont have any regrets. The tickets were a great gesture by the Yankees. Im positive they didnt think about the repercussions of it.
No good deed goes untaxed.
“$150,000 in student loans”
Unless he is a neurosurgeon osr similar, he is hosed.
Why the government feels it deserves a piece of the action of something that occurred between two private people is the entire problem in this country today.
Jeter should just pay the tax bill if he has even a tiny ounce of class.
A $14K charge for Jeter is like 5 bucks to most people.
I know it’s an obvious sentiment ... but GOD I hate the IRS. I mean, I get taxes, etc to some extent but this is an organization that has been out of control for a VERY long time.
I don’t see how someone who blew 150k on college could be so stupid.
naaaa.....
just call them individual gifts, each under the $13K gift ceiling, from different individuals.
That Obama sure is one tax-hungry Mutha...
This reminds me of the Houston man who won a years worth of couponds for free donuts and coffee. The IRS went after him for the taxes owed even on the coupons never used!!
If they let this slide then the next thing you know people will be trading in 3,000th-hit balls all over the place for cash and prizes. We can’t have that. /s
Then he'd owe tax on the $14,000. You can't win.
The guy owes $150,000 in student loans and he GIVES the ball to Jeter? He could’ve sold it to a collector, paid off his student loans in full, and still pocketed over quite a bit of cash for what he could’ve received for it. Soon he’ll be regretting his “selfless” decision. ....if he isn’t already.
Anybody who is 23 and has 150k in student loans is brain dead anyway. He better have a really good degree for that..
>>Then he’d owe tax on the $14,000. You can’t win.<<
Well, it may seem a hassle, but a single call from Jeter to his accountants to take care of this fan so he doesn’t owe anything would still be pocket change.
Jeter needs to give him about 20k, 13 for the tax on the ball plus 7k for the tax on the 20k, which means the poor guy breaks even
he caught ball.. no tax... gave ball to yankees for 70k in tickets they couldnt sell.. owes tax on 70k.. if tried to sell tickets would prob get 15k unless yankees go to world series
>>Soon hell be regretting his selfless decision. ....if he isnt already.<<
Some people are born with class. This fan is one of them.
