Czechs consider banning Communist Party

PRAGUE (AP) -- They're the Czech Republic's fourth-largest political party, but the hardline Communists could soon be outlawed if the center-right government has its way.

It's more than two decades since communism collapsed here, but the survivors and ideological heirs to the party that ruled from 1948 until the "Velvet Revolution" of 1989 are under increasing political pressure.

Petr Necas' government has taken the first step toward a possible ban by asking the Interior Ministry to work on a legal complaint to make it happen. A study commissioned by a Senate committee compiled numerous complaints from lawmakers about their conduct.

The party, which is vehemently opposed to NATO, brands opponents "terrorists" and maintains friendly ties with the ruling Communists in Cuba, China and North Korea.

Unlike most other communist parties in the region that have joined the left-wing mainstream, the Czech party has maintained its hardline stance.

Supporters of the ban say it is a direct successor of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, whose members killed more than 240 political prisoners while thousands of other opponents died in prisons.

Jaromir Stetina, the main force behind the Senate report, said the Communists are an anachronism.

The Czech Communists adore the violent communism based on Marx and Lenin," Stetina told The Associated Press. "They adore revolutionary violence."

He says the party should have been banned immediately after the Velvet Revolution.

Many of the former Eastern Bloc countries and ex-Soviet Republics have become some of the most ardently anti-communist and pro-free-market countries in the world.

Can we ban it here?

How about we start with impeachment?

Russia will NOT be pleased, as they still support Communist parties outside of their near-abroad.

The Communists are to political parties as the Mafia is to business organizations. Both are criminal enterprises and as such should be OUTLAWED!

Excellent point! Why is putting the word "Party" after something make it OK? I could create the "NAMBLA Party", would that make it OK?

It’s common sense that totalitarian and revolutionary parties be banned. Or one with an armed “military wing”

A similar ban in this country would take out the Democrats, given their far Left tilt at this point in time.

No, instead of a ban, a madia campaign reminding the citizenry of the attrocities committed by communists would be more effective. Make it a mandatory part of the school curriculum, as early as the third grade. These sorts of things are more likely to work.

How about a novel idea. Hold the communists accountable to their brutal rule. Prosecute and jail them. Remind the useful idiots why they should avoid communism. For some reason, communists get a pass on accountability.

Communist Parties are treasonous at their core. They should be banned.

It looks as though there are smart people in Eastern Europe. Or is it just that those people know what Communism is REALLY like?

What they need is a version of the Nuremberg Trials.

Hunt down the individuals who ran the death camps, the murderers of political prisoners, and put them on trial. Continue the hunt relentlessly for years, exactly like the Israelis did against the Nazis.

I lived in the Czech Republic for nine years (2001-2010). Heh.....I actually taught a few English lessons through my old school for the General Secretary.

The problem with the KSCM (Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia) is that they’re essentially unreconstructed communists; they still adhere to the Leninist doctrine of armed revolution and insurrection. Simply put, they advocate overthrowing the government by armed force.

I asked my student (Mr. Meciar)why don’t they do away with that particular part of the Party program; he looked at me like I just stepped out of a UFO from Zeta Reticuli or something. As he put it, the KSCM are “ideologically pure and consistent in line with Marxist/Leninist principles”.

Now, here’s the best part!! He was so impressed with my lessons and teaching methodology (which was to engage him in political debates, which he genuinely enjoyed) that, without my knowledge, he recommended me to the North Koreans. So, one fine evening, I was sitting at home with my ex-wife in Prague, and the phone rings: she picks it up, and turns white as a ghost. She says to me, “Honey, the North Korean embassy would like to speak with you.” You could imagine my surprise! So, I spoke to a gentleman from the DPRK Embassy in Prague, and he extended an invitation for me to come and teach English to “’high ranking Party and military leaders’”.......IN PYONGYANG!!! And my ex-wife could come with me, of course. I told the gentleman I’d have to speak to my wife first, and I’d get back in touch with him. So, I asked my ex, “Whaddaya say, pumpkin? Wanna take an all-expenses paid trip to lovely Pyongyang for a one-year teaching assignment?” (Tongue-in-cheek, of course) Her response was, “Do you want me to kill you in your sleep tonight?” Needless to say, I declined, and I would’ve anyway, because I had the sneaking suspicion that if I, as an American, went over there I’d have my passport taken and conveniently “misplaced”. Forever.

So, I thus missed my chance (along with my ex!) for that prime spot on the reviewing stand next to Dear Leader.

Being an American expat English teacher?

Greatest. Job. Ever.

How can you do it (from a practicality point)?

They’ll just call themselves Democrats - like they do in the USA.

Hunt down the individuals who ran the death camps, the murderers of political prisoners, and put them on trial.

I agree, but it's not all that practical.

The massacres mostly occurred during 1950's or earlier. There was also the crackdown on the Prague Spring of 1968. Nearly everyone who was complicit in the atrocities is already dead. The handful of perps still around are going to very, very old, more than likely living in Russia, and it will be a cold day in hell before Putin lets the Czechs or any other outside nation touch them.

I think their utopianism, all by itself, determines the treatment they deserve as a political organization. They repudiate all non-communist societies and set themselves up as their mortal enemies. The political structures within those societies are there for the society’s benefit, they are not there to be “gamed” by its mortal enemies. Communist parties should be banned and their leaders thrown in jail in accordance with the Smith Act. What keeps this from happening is a decadent view of freedom popular among self-satisfied elite boobs.
