There was speculation that House leaders were planning to cut funding for Pell Grants—needed financial aid for college students—in order to win the support of Tea Party radicals.

Nobody cares about starving students apparently.

Let them eat tree bark if they're too lazy to work their way through school.

It’s not really a cut. Its money that Boehner had added in that he is now being forced to remove. But it’s going to get called a cut anyway and he is going to get blamed for ‘cutting’ it.

Dream on, right now Sallie Mae is the only sector growing in non-revolving credit. It is now over $1 Trillion and all controlled by the government.

They need to define the word cut because....

Baseline Budgeting Makes Real Cuts Impossible in Washington

I think this was releasaed as an attempt to scare college kids a month before college tutition is due. Media is trying to demonize the Tea Party and gin up the college vote.

When I heard today that EPA is funding MURALS in tunnels in Chicago with grants, I thot about the 125% EPA budget increase. Why not cut that?!?!?!

Boehner is not a good negotiator. He was an idiot to go after Pell grants in August and they will be put back in in the compromise bill—just more bad will for Tea Party and the Republicans—no idea how much Pell grants impact the government budget.

Instead of eliminating one program or another, for starters, I say 10+ PERCENT ACTUAL REDUCTIONS ACROSS THE BOARD—EVERY DEPARTMENT BUDGET TODAY!

I’ve talked to a man at the gym on and off for several years. He was a union member and worked as a school counselor in his 20’s. He’s 42 now and hasn’t worked in about 15 years. He has raised two children in student housing at FSU while his wife “works on her doctorate.” Apparently, they’ve gamed the system for grants, housing, sustenance and everything they need. He was telling me about his high-end home theater and audio system. His wife will never graduate. “It’s the life,” he says.

Pell Grants are largely responsible for the increase in tuitions.

There are always those Government Student Loans that they can carry for life or until the government defaults.

I heard speculation that they were going to cut spending for the men’s room upgrade at exit 54 on the Jersey Turnpike.

Actually - we don't have an exit 54 on our Turnpike but the point is a good one....... ;^)

Why not show some real cojones and call for the abolition of the Department of Education and send the funding back to the States.

So only non-qualified students receive Pell grants?

My daughter worked part-time in college at the college and made minimum wage, hardly enough to have gas money. She had several scholarships and student loans. She also worked as a waitress for a while. She just completed her MBA and is happy to have a job making $30K. She will need to make a lot more than that to pay back her loans. All you holier-than-thou know-it-alls give conservatives a bad name.

Taxpayers shouldn’t be financing anybody’s college education unless it leads to a job. No more Ethnic/Gender/Basketweaving majors. You can do that on your own dime.

Boehner stinks. I hope that what comes from this is he loses his speakership. But he won't. This isn't how it works. If SanFranNan stayed in power after suffering humiliating defeat...then I expect John to be there. There needs to be a mutiny.

I am so disgusted with "my people." The lady that just called in on rush brought a tear to my eye...Donna...and I think choked Rush up. Her husband is on disability and she said "I want to go up to the president and look him in the eye and say 'if you don't want to send out a check...then don't. This fight is worth it.'"

Wow.

We must get a majority of Americans to understand that both parties no longer represent us. Rush is getting it. Thank God he is no longer a GOP shill. YOu better be a right wing conservative of he will cut your balls off...

The siphoning of administrative costs runs across all local, state and national lines. Example: big university research grants immediately takes 20% for admin costs.

At least 80% of local school district costs goes to personnel. Admin salaries are at least twice a new teacher’s salary.

A new prof could earn $36-39 K/9 months. A Dean could earn over $200K. This is at small/med schools, too.

AA/diversity candidates probably pull in extra dollars, too.

I listened to a 3rd year veterinary school student talking to a receptionist last year. She was looking to borrow against a future paycheck of some kind. This was AT THE SCHOOL. She specifically said, “Who cares. With all these loans.......” She was really down in the mouth and looked lost.
