Rick Perry was a Democrat until Karl Rove convinced him to switch parties and run as a Republican against Jim Hightower for Agriculture Commissioner.
Perry is always mentioning Reagan... But no Yellow-Dog Texas Democrat who was a chairman for Al Gore in 1988 would have voted for Reagan. Some Democrats would have... but not a leading member of the Texas party.
Perry is just too slick. He is not conservative at all.

The exodus of conservative Dems from the party was not complete until after the 1994 election. I’m not going to hold what happened in the 1980s against Perry. There’s plenty in perry’s record as governor to be upset about, just as there’s plenty to laud. He’s not my first choice, but I’d proudly vote for him against Obama.

What? The "mandate," as you put it, included an opt out clause for parents.
Second, how is it not pro-life to press for vaccines against viruses like the forms of HPV that cause cervical cancer? Vaccines have to be given before infection. If you're going to vaccinate against an STD, you want to do it before risk of exposure or infection.
The legislature did take Perry to the woodshed for using an executive order in this way but he did his mea culpa, it was repealed and he made amends.
People blow this thing out of proportion and act like he's trying to interfere with parental rights. That couldn't be further from reality.
Compare to what CA is passing right now (AB499) which allows 12yo kids to consent without parental involvement to Perry who let parents make decisions for their kids and opt out.

Perry was never a "left wing commie" - he was a West Texas Democrat. Now you may not know anything about Texas politics, but Southern Democrats were much more socially conservative than northeastern Republicans in those days. Perry was conservative even by Southern Democrat standards, because he was socially AND fiscally conservative. Most of the Southern Democrats moved over to the Republican Party in the 80's and 90's, and changed the Republican Party from a socially liberal, fiscally conservative party into a socially and fiscally conservative party.
And don't forget that the same year he was Al Gore's Texas campaign manager in the primaries, he voted for Bush 41 in the general election.

Back in 1992 Senator Gore was a conservative Democrat. Yes, they existed in abundance back then. Many of them later became Republicans.
Supporting Senator Gore is not the same as supporting algore who is beyond radical left wing.

Who are you talking about, Reagan? After all, Reagn signed a law legalising abortion in California. He also voted for FDR 4 times, and as late as 1982 made it clear that it was not his goal to overturn the New Deal.

In 1984 when Perry was enlisting for Democrat leadership, Texas went 64% for Reagan, Perry did not vote for Reagan, and in 1988 took over as a leader to defeat Reagan's veep in Texas.
I'm a Texan, I was not confused about Reagan and Al Gore during the 1980s.
