It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.
Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

The pseudo-science in this report fits very well with the pseudo-science of man-made climate change. Of course I am sure the greenies would gladly join the aliens in their war to genocide mankind.
LSD use is on the upswing?
“Klaatu barada nikto”
This is how low the greenies have to reach........
TRULY grasping at straws.
Not even wrong.
among the oldest tricks in the book.
This is from NASA? We spent taxpayers money on this? And Hanson? Ok it is time to defund NASA.
I say, “Bring it on!”
This is so utterly rediculous I’m embarrased for those who would posit such an idea. So aliens are monitoring our green house gas emissions and are going to destroy us? Honestly, and what’s worse the liberals, at least half of them probably believe this kind of nonsense.
No wonder in Revelation it says they are going to believe “the” lie ...
They should be more afraid of Al Gore unleashed.....
Esteemed Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman believes an alien invasion would fix the economy.
“If we discovered that, you know, space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months,” he said. “And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren’t any aliens, we’d be better—”
“There was a ‘Twilight Zone’ episode like this in which scientists fake an alien threat in order to achieve world peace,” Krugman said. “Well, this time, we don’t need it, we need it in order to get some fiscal stimulus.”
Actually the aliens already trashed their own planet’s atmopshere and plundered earth to save their planet. They owe us big time.
I am due reparations from the aliens if you should see them.
Or they might be wathcing us and saying, “Wow, those earthlings sure have a nice planet. We should go there and show them what pollution really is!”
We need to encourage more of this drivel. It will make the point better than any of us heretics can that CAGW is a pile of ...
>to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.
Researchers? The only research these morons have done is watch the movie “The Day The Earth Stood Still.”
Gorebull Warming will get us first.....sooo, there’s that.
“Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth’s atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control ”
This is the one glaring mistake in the study. The aliens are not watching from afar but are here and even have a leader. His name is Al Gore.
The Gorebull warming bsers are really hard up when they use LSD to come up with this reason to believe in Gorebull warming.
“So long, and thanks a lot for the fish”.
Sooner or later someone is going to get that one.
Well, an alien abduction of Obama would be a step in the right direction. The DJIA would jump up an easy 1,000 points on the news.
Jon Huntsman believes in evolution and global warming
Or, they may not...sounds a lot like a movie plot.
Theres no point acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display in your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so youve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and its far too late to start
making a fuss about it now.
(Would you like to hear some poetry?)
Glad we have that cleared up.
Guy has been watching too many Star Trek reruns.
It may not be the most compelling reason, but it's as good as the others.
So, they’re going to destroy us because we destroy things? That’s what I take from this. Hypocrites.
Is someone’s tin-foil hat adjusted a bit too tight?
Seriously; this is how these people think? And we can't articulate conservatism in a way to completely dominate these people?
What an opportunity we have if we would just do it.
"They blew up Congress....Ha Ha Ha Ha!"
I believe this to be the result of mental illness caused by the grievous affronts to reality and common sense when Obama pressed NASA on outreach to the Muslims.
One also has to wonder if Obama is channeling L. Ron Hubbard or something.
They don´t. Not in this galaxy.
This is a complete and utter humiliating admission of defeat for Al Gore and supporters of Anthropogenic Global Warming.
They're going to fix the economy and then destroy civilization.
Speaking of the economy, how many federal grant dollars were spent to produce this report?
man-o-Mann. This is from Penn State that is where global warming data fixer Mann is, has he now infected Nasa?
The light aliens are now receiving left earth millions of years ago, Mann said global warming was less then according his tree ring theory.
Some “scientists” refuse to acknowledge God, and would rather theorize about aliens....
It avoids those messy concepts of values and purpose.....
Minor correction: So long, and thanks for all the fish.
BTW...Already posted (and commented on) yesterday.
So Gort's going to make a return trip to Earth to kick our a$$ for global warming.
I hope he makes his first stop in Tennessee to kick algore's.
Or those good conservative, capitalist aliens might really be saying, if Humanity doesn't get that plague of liberalism under control we must destroy earth to prevent it's taint from spreading into the rest of the galaxy. They learned many millennium ago that liberalism is the greatest threat to galactic prosperity... (Hey my stupid, totally baseless theory is just as valid as their stupid, totally baseless theory)
Makes more sense than the false notion that man-made CO2 is causing any problems. In any case, if these phonies were truly "green" they would promote CO2 emissions. Plants love the stuff. They can't exist without it. As far as they're concerned, the more the better.
Their report ..
"Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere [historically] is the product of oceanic respiration due to the well-known but under-appreciated solubility pump. Carbon dioxide rises out of warm ocean waters where it is added to the atmosphere. There it is mixed with residual and accidental CO2, and circulated, to be absorbed into the sink of the cold ocean waters. Next the thermohaline circulation carries the CO2-rich sea water deep into the ocean. A millennium later it appears at the surface in warm waters, saturated by lower pressure and higher temperature, to be exhausted back into the atmosphere. Throughout the past 420 millennia, comprising four interglacial periods, the Vostok record of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is imprinted with, and fully characterized by, the physics of the solubility of CO2 in water, along with the lag in the deep ocean circulation.
Notwithstanding that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, atmospheric carbon dioxide has neither caused nor amplified global temperature increases. Increased carbon dioxide has been an effect of global warming, not a cause [historically -etl]. Technically, carbon dioxide is a lagging proxy for ocean temperatures. When global temperature, and along with it, ocean temperature rises, the physics of solubility causes atmospheric CO2 to increase.
If increases in carbon dioxide, or any other greenhouse gas, could have in turn raised global temperatures, the positive feedback would have been catastrophic. While the conditions for such a catastrophe were present in the Vostok record from natural causes, the runaway event did not occur. Carbon dioxide does not accumulate in the atmosphere."
So, greenhouse [effect] is all about carbon dioxide, right?
Wrong. The most important players on the greenhouse stage are water vapor and clouds [clouds of course aren't gas, but high level ones do act to trap heat from escaping, while low-lying cumulus clouds tend to reflect sunlight and thereby help cool the planet -etl]. Carbon dioxide has been increased to about 0.038% of the atmosphere (possibly from about 0.028% pre-Industrial Revolution) while water in its various forms ranges from 0% to 4% of the atmosphere and its properties vary by what form it is in and even at what altitude it is found in the atmosphere.
In simple terms the bulk of Earth's greenhouse effect is due to water vapor by virtue of its abundance. Water accounts for about 90% of the Earth's greenhouse effect -- perhaps 70% is due to water vapor and about 20% due to clouds (mostly water droplets), some estimates put water as high as 95% of Earth's total tropospheric greenhouse effect (e.g., Freidenreich and Ramaswamy, 'Solar Radiation Absorption by Carbon Dioxide, Overlap with Water, and a Parameterization for General Circulation Models,' Journal of Geophysical Research 98 (1993):7255-7264).
The remaining portion comes from carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone and miscellaneous other 'minor greenhouse gases.' As an example of the relative importance of water it should be noted that changes in the relative humidity on the order of 1.3-4% are equivalent to the effect of doubling CO2.
Water Vapor Rules the Greenhouse System
Water vapor constitutes Earth's most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for about 95% of Earth's greenhouse effect (4). Interestingly, many 'facts and figures' regarding global warming completely ignore the powerful effects of water vapor in the greenhouse system, carelessly (perhaps, deliberately) overstating human impacts as much as 20-fold.
Water vapor is 99.999% of natural origin. Other atmospheric greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and miscellaneous other gases (CFC's, etc.), are also mostly of natural origin (except for the latter, which is mostly anthropogenic).
Human activities contribute slightly to greenhouse gas concentrations through farming, manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. However, these emissions are so dwarfed in comparison to emissions from natural sources we can do nothing about, that even the most costly efforts to limit human emissions would have a very small-- perhaps undetectable-- effect on global climate.
Water Vapor Confirmed As Major Player In Climate Change
ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2008) Water vapor is known to be Earth's most abundant greenhouse gas, but the extent of its contribution to global warming has been debated. Using recent NASA satellite data, researchers have estimated more precisely than ever the heat-trapping effect of water in the air, validating the role of the gas as a critical component of climate change.
