On the Nature of the Perry Attacks
http://www.redstate.com ^ | Saturday, August 20th | Erick Erickson

Rick Perry once tried to get out of a speeding ticket.

Rick Perry once owned stock in a chain of video stores competing against Blockbuster, some of which also rented adult movies.

Rick Perry once was a Democrat.

The attacks have come fast and furious against him. But most of the attacks take on a peculiar and very telling strain.

A reporter on television or in print will utter a sentence like this, “Privately many Republican consultants suggest Rick Perry may be too Texas or shoot from the hip too much and might turn off necessary independent voters and women.”

It sounds so serious. As Alex Castellanos said on CNN the other night on John King USA, some fear Rick Perry might have “Mad Cowboy Disease.”

Let me sum this all up for you into what Rick Perry’s biggest problem is.

Whether you are talking about Alex (Team Carole Strayhorn 2006) or Karl Rove (Team Kay Bailey Hutchison 2010) or a host of other national Republican consultants, Rick Perry and his Texas team have beaten a significant portion of them.

But they did not just beat them. In many cases, Team Perry then shut the consultants who opposed him out of future business with him.

So there are scores and scores of Republican consultants who have scores to settle with Rick Perry and his team. And for guys like Karl Rove, if Perry were to win the White House, Karl and a few others would see themselves shut out of White House business for at least four years.

Rick Perry may be the only guy in America to have beaten both Karl Rove and also Obama’s own consultant, David Axelrod.

So there’s a lot of score settling in a lot of the attacks. Next time you hear some Republican consultant say Rick Perry can’t win because he is too much of a cowboy, understand that it is probably a national Republican consultant fearful they will be shut out of work if Perry wins and, more importantly, understand that the same dynamics were in place in 1980 with Reagan’s “boys from California” team of consultants and the national consultants back them said the same about Reagan — he’s too much of a cowboy conservative who will alienate key voting blocks.

That’s not to say Perry is Reagan. It is to say the GOP national consultants have been pulling the same stuff since 1980.

Well I’ll just be right there to remind you that anything Obammy said more than a few years ago is off limits per your rules.

I'm with ya...if it's Sarah, I will work my butt off for her. Same for Perry.

IMHO, two great Americans cut from the same cloth.

Yes, there are differences and fine points...but this election is about saving the country from radicals, not about fine points.

May the best man/woman win!

maybe Rove and the others want Palin to get in the race so Perry and Palin split the conservatives and Romney wins the nomination.

That's what I am thinking. And Sarah can understand this as well.

So Redstate.com has decided to slime real pro-American Conservatives.

To be expected. It was just a matter of time until Redstate went over to the Commies and their running dog lackeys.

No, nobody here smears Perry about being a Texan. The guy was a Democrat who decided to support AlGore just as Ronald Reagan's program for defeating the Soviet Union came to its full power.

That is an unforgiveable sin. Rove should have reconsidered the idea of bringing that guy into what appears to be "too big a Republican umbrella".

>>But of course you know that these are not the nature of the objections to Perry at all, but in fact a strawman specifically concocted to avoid the real issues with Perry - Gardasil, TTC, being pro-illegal, his spotty at best understanding of the Constitution, and the Brazilification of Texas, among others.<<

Exactly, these issues were conveniently not mentioned.

Wonder why not?

The Mitbots can count on no more than 10% of the vote. With 90% left to split up among other serious candidates, you can have 8 of them show up with more delegates than Mit.

Was Reagan not a Democrat at one time ? They both came over to the right side .
Rove is now trying to derail Perry because Perry went rogue a long time ago .

No it is not, absolutely not, but even Obama deserves the consideration of context. Had he genuinely changed his ways from his commie past then I would give him slack for that. Or, if he had done a lot of good along with the bad, I would give him slack for that too. But he hasn’t so he gets no slack.

3) DEFEND US AGAINST ISLAM AND SHARIA.

With what? A bunch of empty rhetoric like the other candidates? Talk is cheap. It doesn't help Perry to be friends with Aga Khan. Khan is some sort of King and power broker and Perry is at least sucking up to him. But that doesn't mean Perry is a stealth muslim like Obama. It doesn't mean that the floodgates will be opened under Perry and certainly doesn't mean they won't be opened under some other candidate.

Well sheesh. Let's just cancel the primaries. You seem to have it all wrapped up. You are something else. Yes I know you said in my humble opinion. But still that is so dang arrogant. Hillary was all ready to be President in 2008 at this time. And people here were having orgasms about Fred Thompson. None of that played out. Who would have thought McCain would have won????? Nobody here for sure. So until the very last person drops out and only one candidate is left........nobody knows who will be the nomination. Heck not even all the candidates have announced yet. Just wait and see. This book has a ton more chapters.

Regarding: "Reagan and Bachmann were also once Democrats. i haven’t seen ANYONE make an issue of that. ...that’s a straw man argument."

Neither Reagan nor Bachmann ran for office as Democrats against the Republicans.

That makes a really big difference.

I'm finding a lot of Perry supporters have difficulty differentiating in their minds between VOTERS and POLITICIANS.

That's a very bad sign.

It is the RINO Perry who needs to hold off until 2016
(not yet) so he can get conservative cred.

Ronaldus Magnus never ran for public office as a Democrat.

Rick Perry ran for office and won several times as a professional Democrat politician.

We really don't need RINOs anymore.

I don't worry so much about whether he will look or sound like George Bush, but I am seriously worried about Perry's seeming weakness on illegal immigration. He's flirted with La Raza, shown the propensity to be an open borders guy, said he didn't like the new AZ law, and is way too close to Bush's angle on illegals for my comfort zone.

I don't just want a good candidate, I want a president I can trust in this fragile time.
