EDITORIAL: Obama: Stop selling pickup trucks

President and Government Motors drive consumers into a ditch

The U.S. auto industry wouldn’t exist today if it weren’t for President Obama, or so he says. According to the White House, the 2009 $80 billion auto bailout - of which at least $14 billion was lost - not only saved the American auto sector but preserved 1 million jobs. If you believe that one, he has a $45,000 electric Chevy to sell you.

Earlier this month, at a Ford Motor Co. plant in Chicago, Mr. Obama even argued that Ford, which didn’t take a federal handout, had him to thank for its success. “If [Ford‘s] competitors had gone down, they would have taken down a whole bunch of the suppliers you depend on,” he said. “The brand of American autos would have diminished. That would have had severe consequences for Ford, and that’s the challenge we faced when I took office.” This is an audacious claim. It’s also baloney. Had its competitors vanished, Ford’s greatest challenge would have been to see how quickly it could ramp up production to snap up their market share.

In Minnesota last week, Mr. Obama lectured car companies to start investing in smaller cars. “You can’t just make money on SUVs and trucks,” he declared. “There is a place for SUVs and trucks, but as gas prices keep on going up, you have got to understand the market. People are going to try to save money.” It’s the height of chutzpah for a wannabe executive with no business experience to think it’s his prerogative to tell carmakers that they need to “understand the market,” especially because it’s obvious Mr. Obama is the one who doesn’t understand consumer behavior.

What a beautiful pic, thanks for posting it.

Can't tell for sure if that buck is a 3 or 4 point but he's a nice young buck. That country reminds me of Eastern OR where I hunted many years, there's nothing like the high desert with lots of rim rock, juniper trees and mule deer.

I've hoofed many miles in that type country and just like you if anyone got a buck we could get a vehicle to it or darned close to it so we didn't have to pack it out.

You've sure gotten your moneys worth from your GMC, that's great!

Great, I guess he’s be coming after pickup drivers now.
I have hung onto my truck despite the cost of gas because I am a woman who LOVES her truck. The only down side I can see to driving a pickup is that everyone wants you to help them move and/or haul their crap.
0bama, you can have my truck when you pry my cold dead butt off the seat.
Jim’s wife.

The problem in the ‘70s was only Chrysler, and it had little to do with the size of their cars or the economy.

Actually, Chrysler had the most economical fleet in the US in the ‘70s. Their problems were more related to poor marketing strategies and ineffective dealerships. The bailout was small by todays standards, and Lee Iacocca got them straightened out quickly.

All of the automotive difficulties today can be traced to too much federal protection for unions. This is also what is dragging state and local governments down.

Wrong-headded CAFE standards wiped out the excursion, and the heavy duty version of the suburban too.

The standards should focus on overall efficiency instead of raw MPG numbers.

Ton-Miles per gallon would make more sense than Miles per gallon, and actually might save us more fuel than the foolish MPG scam. (but it would also show how inefficient small cars are compared to large cars)

That’s not Oregon high desert, its somewhere in middle America. Probably similar elevation though.

You’re correct, it reminds me of areas I’ve hunted in Eastern OR.

Ain’t that the truth. I like the ton miles idea. Clueless EPA is not ever going to be a help. Physics, and ingenuity and using them to get the most out of a gallon of gas. More cannot be had than physics and ingenuity allow. Despite what a clueless president and EPA want.

Physics also determines what is more important than gas mileage, and that is the force on occupants when a 1000 pound vehicle meets a 4000 pound vehicle in an accident.

When you stop to think about it, indirectly it is a slap in the face to people with large families.

Actually it's just myself and my wife. But because the lift weighs about 300-400 pounds and the wheelchair weighs 300 pounds plus our weight we need a large hi-Top van. Hi-Top is needed for ceiling clearance for her. The governments one size fits all answer? Mini vans with the floor board lowered too within about 4-6 inches of the road. Those vans will not go up our driveway. Not to mention they cost over $50K new. Most disabled persons do not have that kind of money.
