For you to respond like that is disturbing. If a Californian is concerned, I’m concerned.

Well, if I were there I'd right now, be totally prepared, as this could very well be a foreshock for a really big one. Not likely, but very possible.

Those making jokes about a 6 range earthquake, never were on top of one, or were not near an epicenter of a 6 range. Even a 6 can make you think the world is coming to an end if near the epicenter. Been there.

But this being felt in such a wide region of the country, is concerning, this could have simply been a foreshock to, say a 7.5 or more. Hopefully not.

When I felt my first tremor I practically dove under a table,

I just read it is best to crouch beside a table during an earthquake because a table creates an airspace Anyone under a table would be crushed.

Their house was on a node. Major damage a mile or so in either direction.

The Japanese have a saying: In case of earthquake, run upstairs, because upstairs is a good place to be when upstairs becomes downstairs...

I'll remember that!

I think it’s the camera angle. Look at the building in the lower left for perspective.

Link below is to a live web cam of the Washington Monument. Sure appears to be leaning, but it may be an artifact of the camera angle.

If it make you feel better about the future of the Washington Monument, it looks as though the horizon in the photo is not horizontal.

"I looked for fault lines right along the east coast of the US on a few maps, and saw none, so naturally we’re pretty worried."

"In New England, these tremors occur along a few large faults, or many smaller ones.. Because of local geology, some areas are busier than others. At the busy end of the spectrum are central New Hampshire, central Maine and south-central Connecticut; at the other end are southern Vermont and western Massachusetts."

Looks like 2 high strain fault zones known as the Spotsylvania zone (just west of Fredricksburg) and the Shores melange zone west of the Spotsylvainia.

Both zones run pretty much north / south fron the NC border into Maryland.

In the VA Piedmont, these high-strain zones are Reverse and strike-slip ductile high-strain zones of Taconic to Alleghanian age (~450- ~300 Ma). Many of these ancint faults were reactivated during Mesozoic geologic period.

Ancient faults that have slowed but, still can store a lot of energy of eons as the earth's crust is still dynamic. An

The whole picture is leaning. See the natural progression in horizon height from right to left? That wouldn’t be so in Arlington/Alexandria along the Potomac.

I think so, too. But what a message from God if it were true!

I’ve been in Pittsburgh several times when we had earthquakes between 5.0 and 5.5. Never felt any of them. Sure felt this one though.

Yep. Wife called and said AGH and Professional Building where her office is, shook. In the hills 27 miles east there was nothing.
