It’s not necessarily a fear thing. It’s more like WTF - we don’t have 6.0 earthquakes in the northeast. I’m working in Manhattan 30 years. This is the first time I’ve felt the building shake. Very weird.

Never experienced anything like it. My bafflement as to how anybody manages to live in California and stay sane has just shot the moon.

Who said anything about us staying sane?

New Madrid is estimated at between 7.2 and 8.1. There is an order of magnitude of difference between those estimates, but the truth is that no one is quite sure. There were no seismographs then.

5.8-5.9 is not inconsiderable. Fortunately the epicenter was in sparsely-populated farmland. Had it been beneath a densly populated area we might be getting casualty reports.

That's kinda what I was trying to say. There wasn't one but two jolts and a rolling. The first one and then a rolling and then a much stronger jolt with more rolling. The floor was moving when I walked. Not bad but noticeable.

The lamps and shades moved and the plants on their hooks on the balcony were swaying.

We have a DVD stand that always falls over but it didn't. Maybe it was because the floor was moving ...hmmm...kinda east and west instead of north and south. If had been the other way it would have fallen.

One of our youngest son's friends lives nearby and has a 47 inch TV that came with a earthquake safety wire that he never put on.

I think the famed “Bush’s Fault” runs right through that area.

Haven't asked my wife yet if she felt anything at home (in Waterbury). I'm in Simsbury at work, and felt a very light rumbling.

I work at an explosives company though, so when they are out doing product testing, it isn't unusual to feel similar size rumbles - they are usually preceded by a loud bang though, and this time it wasn't.

I live on the other side of the Scantic River, Buckhorn area. Near the old Wallop School one room school house.

Verizon was still out ten minutes ago. I think it is sheer volume of calls.

I used to know a divorcee from Napa, CA, who get real excited every time an earthquake hit. (True story.)

May have been commented but UH.... the FALL line is NOT

the FAULT LINE, OK?

Go to USGS online for the pertinent information. New Madrid fault line is then listed. There is an Augusta Fault Line too, which is lesser. FYI

There was a similar quake in 1897: Largest Earthquake in Virginia. Interestingly, they had aftershocks for about a week. As far as a 1000 year quake? DC would go back to being a swamp.
