The number of power outages in Connecticut keeps climbing, affecting more than 700,000 utility customers.
Connecticut Light & Power, a unit of Northeast Utilities System and the state's largest utility, says Tropical Storm Irene knocked out power to about 621,000 customers as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday. That's about half of its customers.

45 hours in the dark a few miles from Interstate 83 in PA—and all that is wrong is one tripped pole fuse, no downed wires, no blown transformers.
It is now the state of Disconnecticut.
Power Outages?!?!? Oh the humanity!!! God forbid if we can’t access our cable tv, internet, and charge our cell phones for 2 entire days.
I still say this CT in the black outcome is a result of towns and cities regulating the cutting down or prohibiting the removing of ones own trees. Permits need to be applied for to cut foliage on property you own. Utilities need to get written and possibly notarized permission from property owners to trim and remove trees that threaten the overhead lines.
Excessive regulation kills us again.
Personally I dread ice storms.
NH still has about 65000 households without power.
There were people in this forum calling folks in the Northeast crybabies, yesterday.
Yeah, power outages are no big deal unless you need electricity to pump your water and you can’t afford a generator.

Notice that these line crews are not coming from the USGov, neither are they coming from the States. Same thing happens when the Northeast US has major power outages due to ice storms. We get WAY more help from Canada than we do from any of the States or the FedGov. And we pay for it through our electric bills, so we don’t burden anybody else with our troubles.
But we’re not complaining. Just saying that we’ll still be ready to lend a hand like we always do, without minimizing what people are going through because we think we’re tougher than they are.
My mother reports that the lights came on for her at 5 AM this morning. She lives on a main street, but in a rather rural area.
My daughter in OK had two weeks of no power after an ice storm. All of her refrigerated/frozen food was lost.
Unexpectedly, the MSM didn’t give that more than a mention./s
Or have working well pumps, or be able to preserve our food, or provide for our animals, or buy supplies.
I went nearly 2 weeks without power the last time I coaugh a good ice storm.
Fortunately its been a while.

My point, exactly. Thank you. Been there. Done that. No fun. But, THAT’S LIFE.

Most rural folks up here don’t have municipal water.
Their water comes from deep well electric pumps.
And it’s usually the rural folks that experience the most power outages.
Not everybody can afford to buy a generator, and gas is scarce in times like these anyway, so outages of more than a few days mean no water even for those with generators.
Most of us couldn’t care less about cable or even internet. We don’t even have a bloody TV.
Water is the big concern for us.
Some friends of ours have to use a boat to get to and from their house, because their road is under at least a foot of water. But it ain’t the kind of water you can drink.
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!

And us “rural” folks that use a well either have to have plenty of bottled water on hand, or buy a generator.
Can’t afford one right now, and won’t fill the freezer until I can afford one.

Man.. The stories about the 1800’s must be hogwash. No way nobody could live without water pumps and refrigerators.
