I think the whole “poofy hairdo’s” that you see in the dog shows have sort of ruined their true nature. (I know some people like it but I think it is silly).

There's actually a method to that madness. Poodles are technically water retrievers and they don't shed like the vast majority of retrievers do. So, to keep the coats from matting, at one time they were shaved all the way down, but that caused arthritic problems with the joints. So, what we see in dog shows is called "field dress" as hair is left over the joints that need to be kept warm in cold water.

When it comes to the purebreds, there's always a method to the madness, although, I can't quite figure out what Shih Tzu wants bows in his hair. Most of the rest of the toys are shown natural. And don't let these little guys fool you. We have two toy dogs and they are the biggest meat hounds you've ever met.

***Poodles get a bum rap because of the field dress hair do they have in the show ring, but they are smart, loyal dogs.***

I miss my little Misty! 1990-2006.

***Our old Siamese cat, Mr. Kitty, saved us from potential death by smoke inhalation.***

I had a three leged pig like that, who saved our lives several times.

When someone asked why the pig only had three legs I told him...”A pig like that you don’t want to eat him all at one time!”

Yes a cat would. Our two kitties jumped on us one night and would not stop. Then the dogs started in whining like they wanted out.Dh got up and let them out but neither would leave the porch then stood there looking at the garage next door and jumping around.Hubby looked and it was on fire.So yes cats will let you know if something is wrong.

I am thinking of the Standard Poodles with poofs of hair sort of formed into balls. (wish I could explain it better). Sometimes the shows will have a poodle that is shaved except for the poofy balls.

I wondered about some of the toy breeds with bows. I figured the bow kept the long hair out of the eyes and the eyes didn’t weep as much.

Yes, that’s right. All three poodle sizes are shown in the same cut. That’s field dress.

Well, some are. Some would make you fall down the stairs and then feast on your carcass!

We used to have a half-Siamese (full of vinegar; acted like a full Siamese) who once did his very best to “tell” me about an earthquake that had occurred while I was out of the house. *Some* cats are blobs that sit around and do nothing but eat. (Hm, like some humans! LOL!) But other cats are loyal, smart and excellent company. (And good at “pointing” earthquakes!)
