Karl Rove slammed GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, calling his views on Social Security “toxic.”

Such views, Rove said, are “toxic in a general-election environment, and they are also toxic in a Republican primary.”
“And if you say Social Security is a failure and ought to be replaced by a state-level program, then people are going to say, ‘What do you mean by that?’ and make a judgment based on your answer to it,” he added.

Perry ended his chances when he spoke out about SS.
Yep, the Texas Municipal Retirement System right? or something like that.
But a state-level SS? That would be crazy. It’d end up just like all those broke state pension funds.

I don’t know all the details of Paul Ryan’s plan, but here is mine:
For every working person under the age of 35 or perhaps 40===give them back the amount of Soc Sec paid in my them & their various employers. The records of such deductions are available.
Then REQUIRE that such funds be put into a PRIVATE IRA or such for each person. They can continue to add to this IRA as they see fit. IF they don’t have enough to live on when they retire- they better have family who will take them in. NO BAILOUTS from the government.
For those above the cutoff, let them keep contributing to Soc Sec as now, but at the FULL rate. The current 2% lower deduction is only going to hurt Soc Sec harder & sooner & NObama knows this.
Those same people over the cutoff can open an IRA, etc, and they can deposit even more amounts to it, if they wish. All deposits to the IRA will be AFTER TAX dollars, but let them put in as much as they see fit.

Once again Rove crosses the line to damage the republican party, plus what he says is inaccurate as well as irresponsible.
Plus people move from state to state. State-level creates too many complications.
Obviously something has to be done but it must be done carefully.
A smart leader helps the voter understand that the system they fear losing is in danger of wholesale destruction, and they must accept some reforms in order to be able to rely on it.

But go to the SS threads on FR. Go to you local diner. Ask Seniors what they think about someone messing with SS. The view is that it is THEIR money, and anyone who touches it will die.
Perry gave Obambi plenty of rope to hang. Not smart this early.

In reality, you’d need to increase present or future taxes to get it, so these people would end up paying for it anyway. Better to let them just opt out, and thank them for the taxes Congress spent.
The real solution is to float the retirement age annually to ensure break-even solvency. Work a few more years to avoid bankrupting the nation.

My idea for “reforming” social security starts with completely unrelated regulation and ends with totally private individual choice retirement funds.
And, then there are his positions on illegal aliens and support for the Texas Dream Act.
Perry is right about social security. Its a ponzi scheme and a joke. An even bigger joke is Karl Rove. Karl, its over for you. No one gives a shit about you anymore. Why does Fox News pay you to spout your drivel day after day? Karl, just go away, retire on your millions, and STFU.

Yet any politician I’ve heard who’s bold enough to speak about SS reform talks about a gradual change that wouldn’t affect those getting or close to getting benefits under the current arrangement.
No Perry fan, but Rove is a moron.
I am not much on forced savings myself, and being not nearly old enough to get SS before it collapses I am completely for personal accounts. As a compromise I think you could set up a govt sponsored retirement system that would avoid being overly coercive like it is now, as well as avoiding the SS ponzi scheme setup.
Every person in America would get one, either thru their bank or with the SSA like it is now. The govt style SS with paycheck withholdings would be the default or you could opt out to do your own thing, or even do both. You could also have other IRA’s but one would be permanent.
Another thing is that any retirement deferred plan with any entity couldn’t be loaned out and must be 100% funded and segregated.
Not sure how Perry’s remarks might play during the Republican primaries, but anyone who says they will not be harmful among some independent voters in a general election is simply kidding themselves.
Candidates can and should talk about SS (and Medicare and Medicaid) reform in a sensible way, but candidates who take it too far will pay a price at the voting booth in a general election.
