The National Terror Advisory System (NTAS), which has replaced the original color coded terror alerts, remains at a “heightened level of vigilance” amid reports that a specific and credible threat was identified Wednesday evening by U.S. intelligence personnel. Homeland Security has as of this writing advised that the threat is as of yet unconfirmed, and the office of the Secretary of Homeland Security has not issued an elevated or imminent alert at this time.

U.S. officials said Thursday they were investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat that al-Qaida was planning to use a car bomb to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the first tip of an “active plot” around that date.

Law enforcement officials were investigating three people who recently entered the U.S. The threat was received by the U.S. intelligence community late Wednesday night, officials said.

“There is specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information,” said Janice Fedarcyk, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York division. “As we always do before important dates like the anniversary of 9/11, we will undoubtedly get more reporting in the coming days.”

Security has been enhanced around the country in the weeks leading up to the 10th anniversary. Law enforcement officials have been wary, particularly after information gleaned from Osama bin Laden’s compound in May indicated that al-Qaida had considered attacking the U.S. on the anniversary and other important dates.

The threat came in a single piece of information and was so specific — and came at such a time of already heightened alert — that it could not be ignored. The officials described the threat to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters.

Or alternately, Obama uses America to further AlQaeda,(~ even makes AlQaeda a ally~) and the MB’s interests as a favor to them and then what happens? They still can’t leave us alone for 5 minutes.

What a bunch of back stabbing , unappreciable allies!

Obama needs to make better choices!

“Panic and paralysis is what they want.”

Living in the SF Bay Area, I can only imagine the panic and paralysis that would be created if they blew several of the major bridges in our area.

People would be stranded on one or another side of the bay.

It would take hours to drive around it.

I believe it would have a devastating effect on commerce and daily living in our area.

No offense but the round-eyes got it a whole lot worse in the Japanese theatre.

Did you hear Obama tonight?

“God Bless America! God Bless The USA!”

He was very out of character.
And on the same day they raise the defcon levels?

I think this clown is playing another scam.

I always said that if al-Qeada wanted to truly paralyze this nation in fear, the attack would have been on Saturday, September 8, 2001. One plane into the stadium at the Ohio State game, one into the Mall of America, one into the center of Disney World and one into Yankee Stadium as the Red Sox visited. The death toll would have been upwards of 150,000 and the average American would be terrified seeing the carnage in the heartland.

Why would they attack two cities that they’ve already partially psychologically defeated? Look for these attacks elsewhere. And the authorities will be surprised. Texas might want to really step up awareness, would be my guess.

I would think Chicago, since it's the President's hometown. Full disclosure, I'm from Chicago, so I hope I'm wrong about that, but if there's a mis-direct, I'd be keeping my eyes open around here.

It was one of those family stories that get told at gatherings, whenever the subject of Pearl Harbor came up. I think my Grandmother’s brothers had a heck of a time dealing with government bureaucrats who wanted to ship off a blind old lady back to Quebec, where she had no immediate living family! This family story taught me a healthy distrust of government... from a very young age.

I’d have to disagree. There’s nothing about this guy that at any age would’ve led anyone to believe he should/could take the course he’s taken and be where he is without divine intervention. I’m not that smart but I’m smarter than he is and he’s resident. There’s a hand on him beyond our ken. I have no doubt.

Nah, not even close. A dozen ragheads shooting up different malls and schools in victim disarmament zones at the same time will bring this country to it’s knees.

Relax, it won't happen here in the SF Bay Area. After the 1989 quake when the Bay Bridge got knocked out, there was no panic. Major streets jammed with stuck electric trolleys and cars, lots of people walking in the streets, no electric street signals. I was in downtown San Francisco, lots of my co-workers were stranded from getting home across the bay. I drove one co-worker to her sister's home in the Marina where the fires were raging. People were calm and very mannerly. I couldn't believe how nice everyone was to each other.

Our bridges are very sturdy, and have been hit by jet planes without damage. I doubt very much that one could be damaged by terrorists, let alone several. The authorities are watching the bridges.
