BOSTON (CBS) – Kara Kennedy, the only daughter of the late Senator Edward Kennedy, has died.

A Kennedy family friend confirmed to WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that the 51-year-old Kennedy passed away after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

In 2009, she accepted the Medal of Freedom on behalf of her father, who was home battling cancer.

Kennedy battled lung cancer in the past, but her cancer had been in remission since 2003.

From Wiki:

Kara passed away from an apparent heart attack while at a Washington, D.C. health club.

The irony is a head shaker.

>>> Talk about a hard-luck family...what are the odds...?

Precisely 100%. Everybody dies. With a large extended family, some die sooner then others.

Married with two kids under age 20. Originally diagnosed as inoperable but apparently being a Kennedy has perks. I did read that two of Ted’s three kids had cancer, the third had a non-cancerous tumor removed from his spine. Even the ex wife had breast cancer.

In less than 3 years, we lost my daughter, brother, bil, mom and about 25/30 aunts, uncles and cousins. Then in a 10 month period of time my aunt lost all 3 of her daughters to cancer. People just do not hear about the average citizen’s deaths. My aunt died about 2 weeks ago.

Obviously genetic...didn’t Joan (Ted’s ex) have breast cancer...however, since both Joan and Ted were drunks..maybe alcohol DOES kill cancer cells..

Wow. That is ironic.

My mother in law always said that when it's your time, it's your time. She never worried about anything.

Wow....another surprise..can you confirm...just realize, when you mentioned her name, that she’d pretty much disappeared from the public eye for some years. IIRC, she was doing OK as a talkign head, and wasn’t she dating someone famous for a while..

Chemotherapy and radiation can cause heart damage. My mother, who didn’t have a history of heart trouble, had a minor heart attack while undergoing chemo for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I am happy to say that she’s been in remission for over 10 years and is doing well.

This family is so tragic. I am sorry to hear this.

This is a tragic death, but I disagree that the family is tragic. There are accidents, deaths, and disease galore in any extended family. Many families suffer this much and worse, they're just not newsworthy as far as the media is concerned.

An administrative law judge I knew who ran several miles every day had a heart attack and died at the age of about 48. He had young kids.

For many, their first heart attack is both the first time they knew they had a problem and the fatal heart attack.

Also, a cub scout leader we knew who was a physician, the only thin one in the bunch, died at my son’s cub scout camp in the pool. Massive heart attack.

Thanks for posting the info. I didn’t realize TK had a daughter. Must have been something underlying for her to have sudden cardiac death at 51, very sad. I am sort of curious as to what a professional sailor does.

That makes sense. I'm glad to hear that your mother is doing well. I can imagine what a stress chemo and radiation must be on the body.

My father in law had both, but didn't survive. He passed away a year after my husband and I were married, six months after he was diagnosed.

This family is so tragic.

Is there a family that isn't?

The hardest death we had to deal with was my daughter’s. It was so hard to lose a child no matter her age. My mom died in January, 2007 just a few months before her 103rd birthday. Now, her whole family is together again. The night after my aunt died, I woke up in the middle of the night singing, “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be”. That is how they would want us to act. My mom does have a cousin still living at the age of 105. Went to see her when I was down last weekend and she is amazing.
