I mentioned Rick Perry’s DREAM Act debate blunder in my round-up post.
It gets second place.
The cringe-worthiest moment, by a hair, was when Perry botched what should have been his most potent attack on Mitt Romney’s chronic flip-flopping. As I noted on Twitter when it happened, any random high schooler at the CPAC conference in Washington could have done better than this.
If this is how Perry’s going to take Obama on in debates, we’re in trouble. Someone inject him with some Red Bull and a dash of Herman Cain’s personality.

Absolutely not, although I can’t stand MR. He is no good, but a good liar. To stand up there and say that Romneycare is somehow “different” insults my intelligence. C’mon people, how in the world can we elect somebody to take down that monstrosity OBAMANOTCARE with this guy.
But no, our country cannot survive another 4 years of that imposter, no way. Guess I’d have to vote for the magic underwear guy waiting to rule his own planet in the afterlife. I used to think I wouldn’t, but cannot stand to even look at Obama anymore.
I don’t want to go too far out on a limb, this is FR after all, and this poster would never want to incur the wrath of Jim Thompson over a debate critique.
However, Romney showed he’s far more disciplined on his feet, than Perry.
I think Perry will start on Romney now - and some of it will be effective (Perry can be charismatic).
IMHO yesterday’s debate was one of the most informative, I’ve ever seen. Very good moderating.

Yes, I would sit it out, or vote 3rd party. I’d rather have a Democrat destroy country in the name of Liberalism than have a RINO do it in the name of “Conservatism”. If a Perry or Romney is elected they will do so much damage to the name “Conservative” that the Democrats Socialists will dominate for the next 40 years.
Also, I want to send a message to the RINOs that we will NOT vote for their Liberal/Socialist candidates. If Romney or Perry gets the nomination, the RINO will be responsible for a 2nd term of Hussein, not the Conservatives.

He seemed completely confused, was rambling and appeared to be talking to himself. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it in a national debate.
I agree with you 100%. He IS a George W. Bush redo. If Rick wins the nomination I will vote for him.But I will be in the minority election night.
I am seeing the names on this thread and realize what kind of thread this is, but I’m posting this just in case some FReepers chance to come by and read what you all are saying.
I want you to know that while I was sad to see Perry did not do well in last night’s debate, and while I know he defends most issues that are 100% conservative but a few that are considered less than conservative, I have not tossed him out yet, and I believe other Perry supporters have not either.
For all of you people saying no Perry supporter has been around, please allow me the opportunity to show you I was here posting last night.

This is actually why Obama fears Perry so much. Obama is counting on the hispanic vote to carry him to victory. Along comes Perry and suddenly Obama is facing losing a large chunk of that base.

Upon going to that link (above) you see Rush advising his listeners that we will need to get the Texas electoral vote to win this election, and we will need to get the Hispanic vote from Obama to win this election against Obama.
Rush’s segment on this yesterday was every informative, should one have ears to listen.
However, not considering whether or not we need to take the Hispanic vote from Obama to win in the general election, I don’t think Perry is doing a good job in these debates explaining the entire immigration situation here.
He is particularly doing a bad job explaining himself on the Texas DREAM Act.
Here are a few things I wish he would at least address:
1. Perry needs to let people know that states have no right to deport. By not making people aware that a state can not, by any legal law in The U.S., deport immigrants, others may think, and they do, that he is soft. People mistakenly think Perry COULD send them back. He CAN’T, but yet too many people think that he CAN and that he just DOESN’T.
Rick Perry has to get that misguided notion straightened up if anyone is even to ever come close to understanding what he is doing or why. Like it or not, neither Perry nor the State of Texas can deport illegal immigrants. That is only, by law, a federal action.
2. Rick Perry needs to tell people from OTHER STATES that if they want in-state tuition, they can get it from their own stinkin’ states! I get tired of hearing person after person complain that THEIR child from Kentucky, or Michigan, or Maine can’t go to a Texas college with an in-state tuition rate for their child but yet... they complain that while their child can’t, some illegal living in Texas CAN.
You know, it’s ONE argument to say you don’t want illegal’s children getting to stay here or getting breaks. It is something totally different when they complain about not getting in-state tuition for their children for college in a state they don’t even live in. They CAN get in-state tuition.. in the state where they live!
Even if Perry can’t step back on his need to manage this problem we have in Texas, when he hears this complain (and I believe it was mentioned in this debate), Perry needs to look them in the eye and say “If you want in-state tuition for your child, then by golly find a college in YOUR state. This is for people who are living in Texas, and YOU don’t LIVE in Texas.
Sorry for that rant. Like I said, it is one thing to talk about something that would benefit a child of an illegal immigrant. It is another thing to complain about some out-of-state teenager not getting in-state tuition in Texas when they have their OWN states they can already get in-state tuition in.
3. Regarding this same issue, I have heard a few now ignorantly claim that these children of illegal immigrants living in Texas go to college FOR FREE! That is ludicrous!
Michele Bachmann quoted the DREAM Act discount as a savings of $22,000 I believe. The UT Austin website indicates a slightly lower tuition per semester rate, but when you include fees, she was probably very close.
So since she used The University of Texas Austin as her example, let’s just keep it at that here.
So a child of an illegal immigrant living in Texas for at least three years (maybe a lifetime for many) who has graduated from high school, submitted their application for American citizenship and going through that citizenship process, and having been accepted to The University of Texas Austin (one of the HARDEST universities in the country to get accepted to), gets an in-state tution rate.
Besides the fact that the student had to be GOOD enough to get into college and competitive enough to get into a major university, they are STILL going to have to pay the regular in-state tuition. These stellar students are NOT going to school for FREE.
4. I also wish Perry would point out that these students who are entering Texas colleges are in the process of working on and receiving their American citizenship. They are taking actions available through our federal government to be citizens, and the government would have track of them at that point and KNOW if they were following through their citizenship process as well (a cost of approximately $30,000.00 per person), that cost IN ADDITION TO the in-state tuition that student is paying out of his or her own (or family’s) pocket.
Of all the above points, I would think that would be the one that Perry could be the most proud of getting out to people.
I live in Texas, and I understand this is not a matter of wanting to reward illegal immigrants but more a situation we have to manage so that we are not left with these folk in the gutters killing each other (and us), selling drugs, making a living through prostitution rings, etc. Texas does not want all that junk in our state! So... we MANAGE the situation we are left with because of a lax federal government that has not protected us as it should have done and has not deported the illegal immigrants that should have been deported.
I also understand what Texas politicians feel they must do to manage the situation does not come off well to many others.
I just wish Rick Perry would clear up some of the absolute nonsense that is being thrown about with this issue and what is or is not being done here - what can, and can not be done here - and what has, and has not been done here in Texas.
This is not going to be his best issue with conservatives, and some people are going to be upset with The DREAM Act regardless, but my golly, when these incorrect fallacies are mentioned or people just don’t have the right information, the least he could do for himself is to defend what he can and correct all he should.
But just for me... HEY PEOPLE, IT’S NOT FREE.
I think the debates may matter more than you think. They have served to make Romney appear far less objectionable than he did previously. I know Mitt is a flip flopping chameleon, but I've gotta say his effective debate performances are probably changing a lot of other peoples minds. If conservative media starts really warming up to him, he could do much better in some of these primaries than you think.
Romney will lose everywhere that matters in Republican primaries. Romney can not win in the south or the west,
I'm not so sure. Had Perry even held his own last night I'd continue agreeing with you here, but man, Perry was awful. Not only did he not debate well, some of his statements were down right offensive. The idea people don't have a heart if they don't support Texas's version of the DREAM act was just....well, really bad.
Trouble is, the Rio Grande is like international waters.
It is treatized (or whatever) so that both countries can benefit from it.
Its a problem, but we (the U.S.) signed something away and said we would share or whatever.

This is what those of us in the know have been sayin’ all along. He did not debate his last political opponent, Bill White, a Harvard lawyer from Houston, at all. Just flat refused to, and us Perry supporters knew that was the right move.
I had two huge porblems with bush.....spending and illegal immigration. Perry sounded like Bush on protecting our borders. Since I live 45 miles from the largest border crossing (San Ysidro) and in a sanctuary city and state, I know exactly how the open borders policies effect us....none of it good.
Slight correction: he gave fuel to the democrats last night! We will now hear news opinion segments where the commentator says: "Even Republican candidate Rick Perry supports the DREAM act...."

The Perry I saw last night, poses an existential threat to Obama.
Not so much to Romney, but that “heartless” talk will indeed neutralize much of Obama’s racial politics - he’ll keep his own core of racially-based core black voting base - but Obama’s got nothing on Perry for Latinos.
That gaze into the camera talking about the woman with cancer, in his office was pretty well done.
If Perry can keep from getting knocked out of the race by Romney, he’ll clobber Obama.
I think he has already done that with his "last names" pander in the last debate, and the "heartless" pander last night.
I'm sorry, we don't have to play to racism (racist orgs like LaRaza) and liberal for the children lines to win.
Most of us saw the real Rick Perry, he was the only candidate booed (twice) last night, and it wasn't because he was a bumbler, it's because of his stance and record concerning illegals.

Worth repeating. Perry’s conservatism isn’t from the heart, but what he needed to be elected in Texas. Mitt...well, his conservatism is also head knowledge. He can talk about the 2nd Amendment, for example, but it will never be a part of who he is.
Both are mirrors. They reflect the views of whoever they want votes from. And put either in Washington DC, and the people surrounding them will be liberals - because let’s face it, most of the Republicans in DC are liberal in their hearts.
