DALLAS Few broadcasters had a bigger impact on North Texas than Jerry Haynes, who has died at age 84.
He died Monday morning at a nursing facility in Longview from complications due to Parkinson's Disease with family at his side.
"I helped raise families you know," Haynes said in a 2008 interview with News 8. "So, I was in people's living rooms every day as they were getting dressed and eating their cereal. So I'm a buddy. They saw me. I didn't see them."
But the public man also had a private life, his children remembered.
"As a very very young child, his father took his own life," said Gibby Haynes, 53, Jerry's oldest son. "He grew up with a single mom who had five children in Plano, Texas."

He lived in my neighborhood (Lake Highlands), and all the kids loved him. We’ve all been posting about him passing, and our memories of him.
He definitely impacted lots of children in a very positive, way and he’ll be missed.
Another part of my childhood is gone. Along with Bill “Icky Twerp” Canfield, this man was one of the icons of my youngest tears.
The Dallas that exists today is nothing like the city I knew.
RIP.
More people probably know him as the Dad of Gabby Hayes, the lead singer of the Butthole Surfers.
I always wondered if they titled the song “Pepper” as a tip to Mr. Peppermint?
RIP MR. Peppermint. Muffin’ got on my nerves.
Although I can voice him at will.....
RIP Jerry Haynes.
Gibby, You oughta be ashamed of yourself, dumbass.
I did not know that he was Gibby Haynes’ father.
Wow.
Gibby is a wasted tool/fool,( butthole surfer crap and all) But this is about Jerry Haynes. RIP. He lived up the street from Mamma....Right off of Lawther.
Thanks for the memories Mr. Haynes. Muffin, I hate you.
(stopped up nasal cavities... “Hey Mr. Peppermint....”)
I wish Muffin had pups/whatever and we could shoot them...
Am I evil?
Same could be said for just about any city.
He lived up the hill from my grandma off of Lawther near Whiterock Lake. Very nice house, though not real big. He was a humble guy. Very well liked in the Channels. ( the local channels, that is...)
I don’t think much of Gibby. He was a dick when I met him at Theatre Gallery in the 90’s ( Deep Ellum ).
Roky (13th Floor Elevators) is/was a cool dude. Is he still alive? Anyone? Roky Erickson?(sic)
Three generations of my family grew up with this man in the morning. A better era has truly passed. RIP, Mr Haynes. You were loved by many.
I remember Mr Peppermint.
RIP Jerry.
My family moved to Dallas in 1961. I was 6 years old and literally grew up with Mr. Peppermint. R.I.P. Mr. Haynes. The world was a better place because you were in it.
Roky is still around and doing quite well for Roky. For a while there it did not seem like he would get it together, but he plays in Austin once in a while and does a damn good job.
There were shows back im the day where he would try to play and simply could not play at all. Roky is back.
You should check out the stuff he did with Okkervil River.
I saw the Butthole Surfers play a couple weeks ago and they were damn good but much more chilled out than they were 20 years ago.
Gibby is a good guy, but back in the day the scene was nuts.
Had some good times with those guys.
ROTFLMAO!
